The Words You Choose Matter!

Scripts! That's a dreaded word in any form of sales. I challenge you to bring up the idea with any group of 2 or more professionals and watch the eye-rolling, foot-shifting and collar-pulling. The general discomfort is just as strong as if you had mentioned a get together for Amway.

Hang on now.....come back!

I'm not talking about THOSE scripts! I'm talking about the scripts we can use in our heads. Not memorizing phrases and canned responses, but practicing the words we'd like to use in our conversations. Words matter...you know this! If you've ever read, and reread, posts or emails, you know that you are screening for your word usage (and in my case spelling and grammar). So do you use the same principles when you speak? It's hard when you are on the spot with a client, so practicing in your head is a great way to ensure that you are ready for all situations.

Some examples:

  • Yes vs Yeah (seems easy? but haven't we all done it?)
  • Investment vs Cost
  • Challenge vs Problem
  • Repair vs Correction

I bet you can find any negative word and use a more positive, forward thinking, solution oriented phrase. For the ones above? I had a couple minutes to think about examples, it wasn't in the heat of the moment with a client or agent. What if you had these kinds of words and phrases always at your fingertips for any conversation or situation? You can.....if you practice your internal scripts.

Here is a great example (and tear jerker) video of how Words do Matter! Ok....so if the video doesn't launch.....click HERE!

Often the MEANING behind the words escape people and chatter along with misunderstanding presents itself. I found that listening for the purpose or the point regardless of the words used is beneficial and worth it

I agree 100%! I'm a big fan of 'The Secret', and the basic idea is that if you change your thought or words, you can change your perception, and change your world. Instead of "I don't want to have to park far away", you instead think or say "I want to find a close parking space." The universe doesn't understand words such as "won't, can't, don't". So if we look back at the first example, it now reads "I want to have to park far away". You can translate this to just about anything, especially when dealing with clients.

Karen, well done on this post.  A lot of agents, myself included, need to slow down and think of the words we use.  They really can sway how something turns out in the end.

It takes a lot of consciousness and practice to perfect possitivism. But once a master, can be a powerful tool in so many ways, not just in the business.

Joe: Thanks, and true that you also have to watch how you say things

Jill: I spend a lot of time thinking about what I want to say and the words I want to use

Suzanne: It's a sweet video and makes the point

Kathy: Great example....and it shows a positive attitude and willingness instead of closed off.

Nick: It can be. Just like answering "I'm fine thank you" when someone asks how you are instead of "good"

Carla: That's great also. I hate "guys" in formal settings too.

Margaret: I did too, powerful video

Tammie: It was very moving and really makes the point that our words can pull emotions out of us.

Harry: Ooh, another great example. No one wants to buy cheap

Kally: We should consider the larger picture and make sure we are conveying our true thoughts in our words

Kathleen: We all speak so gently and carefully to children, I wonder if we took the same care with adults....what a better environment we'd all work in.

Phil: There are some words which are just negative, and often we find our brains shut down when we hear them.....thought stoppers.

Laura: me too! :)

Cheryl: Sometimes a visual makes the point better than words

I think that we have a unique opportunity in writing to a client where our word selection can be proofread and rewritten before we hit the send button.  But you are right, in the heat of the moment, especially if a client is upset, we need to slow down and choose our words more carefully.  This allows us to make things more positive and keep the situation from escalating any further.  Great post....and video.  Thank you for sharing.

Bill: Exactly!

William: That is really my point...I wasn't suggesting that we memorize scripts but that we practice word usage and terms so that we aren't caught off guard.

Marte: that's a great example. No one wants to be anxious...good one!

Nina: So true!

Ed: me too.... have a tendency to jump into thoughts. I doubt that will change, so by rehearsing in my head, at least I try not to say things in the wrong way.

Kat: It's very sweet and makes a great point too.

Morgan: I just try to think about a phone call or meeting before I get there so that I can be prepared in my head. I rehearse objections and responses too.

Ron: Great example!

Drick: :)

Richie: True, but people tend to react to the words. It is instinctive I think

Steven: I've heard that the Secret does talk about positive formations of thoughts and words, powerful difference in attitude

Matt: Absolutely!

Patty: Sometimes we can't give everything in a positive manner, but we can try to be more sensitive to the words we use.

Laura: Thank you

Karen: Oh I love the written word...I have time to read and reread before I hit send. My message is exactly what I want to say, maybe not always perfect of course, but at least what I mean.

My sentiments exactly.

It is important to understand the power of words.  Words can motivate, change or encourage someone. Words have face and ability to move people by their own tone and intention.  So use it wisely because it is how we use it that creates our success or failure.

Great post and great video, Karen!

Karen, It's a beautiful post - and I'd like to promote it, by re-blogging.

(I know I can give more examples of words to win with...however, that is not important after watching the video.)
