Pick Your Own Apples in the Hudson Valley

This 3 day weekend is the best for apples and pumpkins in the Hudson Valley.

Apple Picking in the Hudson ValleyApple picking in the Hudson Valley seems to be a little late this year. The leaves are turning color and the apples are still on the trees and anxiously awaiting their time to be picked and eaten. If you are heading up to the Hudson Valley there are  plenty of local farms in the area.  ”Pick your own” apples is such a great fall activity.  My favorite farm is Lawrence Farms in the Town of Newburgh NY.

On good authority from one of the owners, I am told that this is the peak of the season and the busiest one too. People come from miles around to join in and spend an afternoon on the farm. The sun is shining down on the Hudson Valley today and I am sure that it will be a great day for many.

The farms provide you with bags or boxes and apple trees in a beautiful well kept orchard. Your job is to hike around the property and pick the apples. Tasting is encouraged, but please do not over do it. (there is always someone that gets carried away). There are hayrides and petting zoos on some farms. Many sell other vegetables and corn. Some farms have music, lunch for sale and pies. Have you ever tasted apple cider donuts?? Yum.. eat one of those first, and then hike around the property to burn off the calories.

Pick Your Own Apples in Newburgh NYDuring the weekdays, local schools bring students to the farm for a fieldtrip. I remember when my girls were little and how much they loved these trips. It is a wonderful place to experience the great outdoors and see where our food is coming from and how it is grown. The local farmers come out and explain the process to the children adding to their cultural literacy. Best of all, they have fun.

My girls are no longer living in the area, but I still get to pick apples every year. When the weather is great it is the best place to take photos and the apples are super crisp. They don’t get any fresher than “pick your own”. This past week family was visiting from out of the area. Number one on their list of things to do was to go Apple Picking!! We had a picture perfect day and our apple pie for dinner was absolutely perfect.

Janis, The last several years I have picked apples and made pies and frozen the extras. I don't think it is in the cards this year. I just don't have the energy. Maybe someone will bring me some.

Janis, this is one of the first years that I haven't had a chance to go apple picking and I definitely miss it.  Besisdes the fun of it and the chance to enjoy the beautiful outdoors, the apples are great and the taste of the homegrown, straight from the tree can't compare to the storebought ones.  Enjoy!!

The sun is shinning and the temperature is perfect today. Make it a point to be out and about gathering fruit and see the beautiful Hudson Valley.

Hi Janis,

Growing up in upstate N.Y. picking apples was a family tradition. We always went to an apple orchard and picked apples. Mom would make applesauce, baked apples, apple crisp, apple cakes, breads and cookies. She use to can applesauce and put us to work helping her! Can't tell you how wonderful our kitchen always smelled.

Ginny - I will need to post an alternative recipe for baked apples. They are tasty without all the calories.

I always forget that you were from NY Dorie.. Such a contrast to Austin for sure.

Debbie- Absolutely a perfect time.

Noah.. a visit to New York will find you in the apple orchards.
