Dance lessons
This post is inspired by Cara Marcelle Mancuso's AR post "Get Out There and Dance" about her mother and her friends dancing at the VFW club and finding out what a good time they were having. That is understandable as most people do not realize this is a fun pastime for many folks that are willing to give it a try.
I first got an inclination that dance clubs could be fun when my neighbor's mother told us about the great times she was having at one of the Cobb County Senior Centers. She invited me to come over and take a look and I did. I found the most welcoming and friendly people there. No one was a stranger. I found out it is a big social club and everyone is really happy to see each other from week to week at their ballroom dance meetings. They even went together a did a cruise to Hawaii. In fact dancing is one of the best activities for senior centers.
Then my wife suggest we take Shag dance lessons at our Shag Atlanta Dance Club who was offering free lessons. We took them up on the offer and started going down to Nemoes restaurant every Sat night for dance lessons, dinner and then more dancing. Everyone made us feel so welcome. Most are baby boomers just like us. We are still learning but have learned enough to actually dance. We are still going to the dance lessons which are fun in themselves. The pic above is from last night's dance class where the instuctor is really twirlling his pupil.
But the new friends and socialization is more important to me than the dancing and that is what is keeping us coming back. We have meet many new friends and a nice couple who we share dinner and a table with. We are going to venture out with them next Friday on a day trip to the North Georgia Mountains and dinner at a special restaruant they have been telling us about. We are both retired (I know I am still working but I call myself retired OK) and we relate to each other very well.
Mary Ann and I bought two dvds of dance lessons and cds of dance music. We practice at home in our living room. I think this has been fun for both of us and brought us a little closer together and we sped this time together.
So the benefits of dance clubs go far beyond just the dance steps. I didn't realize that until we gave it a try and I am glad we did.
