This past weekend my office had our annual retreat up in Beaver Creek Colorado. The setting was absolutely one of Colorado's finest as anyone who has been to Beaver Creek can attest to. For winter skiing it is a mecca for luxury ski in/ski out condos and houses. For summer and fall lovers of the high country the beauty is one of Colorado's finest.
We had dinner at an amazing restaurant called SaddleRidge. What I did not know until later that evening is the rich history of money, old west lore, luxury and mystique that surrounded this place. What we found out was, the restaurant has the largest collection (outside of museums) of Wild West Memorabilia and Native American Indian Memorabilia in the United States. For anyone that loves history it would be easy to spend a couple of hours walking through and admiring the treasure trove of items located throughout the restaurant.
As the manager told us back in 1987 the Shearson Lehman CEO at the time had been to Beaver Creek and was enamored with it as we were. After receiving a call from a developer that they could in fact build a first class retreat for $27 million he approved the project and increased the budget to over $40 million. No expense was spared in the building and decorating of this luxury lodge with residences nearby. Once the development was built it was enjoyed for several years before a newspaper story broke about the overindulgence and the whole property was put up for sale. Vail Associates bought it and sold off the residential parts and kept the lodge as a restaurant. SaddleRidge is only open during the winter months to the public but is available year round for private party bookings, weddings, etc.
Looking for a fun weekend away? Beaver Creek is great anytime of year and the SaddleRidge Restaurant was a definite plus for dinner and history.
