Years ago I sold a five bedroom three bath home to a family with children and aging grandparents. As time marched on, kids moved out and the family size dwindled down so, I found this family, now a couple, their "downsized" villa.
After a garage sale, ebay and Craigslist they got rid of most of their furniture they no longer needed. But there was still a little problem making things fit. Their dining room furniture still seemed a little bulky, even though it used to be perfect in the larger home.
So, I suggested, for starters, taking off the top part of the hutch. You know, that part that usually has glass doors so you can display some of the china set. We took that down leaving the bottom half and it opened the room up. Then I told them to slant the table so it gave more room to walk around. Because once you pull the chairs out to sit down there wasn't any room for anyone to walk around the table.
And I also took away two of the chairs. This made a world of difference. Then I told them they may have to give up the cabinet encasing the collection of wine glasses. There was a little resistance but I told them we could store it in another room. It was too much. We put a nice airy plant there instead. It made alot of room and alot of sense. Down sizing can be fun as long as you don't feel cramped.
