Onion Soup

So.

I've been inspired by many AR members, including Debb Janes, Debbie Reynolds, Fernando Herboso and Charlie Dresen, to start getting serious about using video in my blog. I have listened to them, and I know they're right about the power of video.

But it isn't something that you can just jump into, so I started with Craig Daniels' excellent video class - Craig is still working on it, but you can sign up for the initial modules, which I found to be tremendously helpful - got some video editing software and started to make videos. And I just bought a new video camera - the iPhone and iPad just don't really cut it in the ease of use category and they're both a bit short on some necessary features, like zoom and audio.

There are two challenges I'm facing now - being in front of the camera and doing voice narration. Neither is easy for me. But watching the pros here on AR, I realize that I'm just going to have to get on with it.

So when I headed home last night, I had the idea that it might be cool to practice while making dinner. And I decided that, having made the video, I might as well put it out there for friends (that would be you guys) for a test drive before doing some real estate videos and exposing myself, so to speak, in front of a much less forgiving audience - the home buying and selling public.

So here then, for your edification, is my debut - Onion Soup. Any suggestions or constructive criticism are definitely welcome. And as a bonus, it is a pretty good recipe and easy to make.

Two bonuses on your blog:
1.)  learning from you on how to do a video
2.)  I great onion soup recipe!

If I may, what software are you using to produce your videos?

Hi Belinda & Erin - Thanks for your comments, copycats. I didn't even notice my sous chef Grover until I was putting the video together.

Hi Kerry - I'm using Sony Vegas Movie Studio. That's one of the editors Craig covers in detail in his class, and I like it. It's a bit like Photoshop, in that it has a lot more features than I'll probably ever use. It cost $69 from Amazon.

Dick, OK what time am I suppose to be over for some soup :)

Excellent job on the video.  First time of have heard about the chewing gum while slicing onions trick.  You forget to mention if it worked or not.

Hi George - It must have worked because I don't remember my eyes stinging, even on the red onion. And you can show up anytime - I have leftovers (although the bacon is endangered).

Dick,

We love onion soup and your recipe rocks, and thanks for the video, your narration is great.  Ron is in charge of videos, and he is a great narrator--I am not, and the best is Debb Janes, I love her voice. I love the bacon addition, and the red onion.  We just made a lot of chicken stock for our freezer and winter needs. A

Dick this is something I really want to do but am at a loss when it comes to editing. Getting a lesson over a bowl of soup sounds great about now on this chilly morning.

Awww Dick. You just plain rock. Not only in the kitchen, but on video. You're so comfortable and natural. That's the best combination possible. I like your voice - it's relaxing and authoritative. You're destined for video greatness.

In fact, you should have a recipe section in your YouTube library. You would connect with a LOT of people ( prospects) that way. Many of us like to cook and love new recipes.

Dick, For your debut you knocked it out of the park. You seem so relaxed and love the way you moved the camera around to different angles. I might suggest you invest in a lapel mike. I had to turn my volume to max and a couple of times it was hard to hear you when you were turned away from the camera mike. Also for real life video, most people's attention will not hold for 7 minutes so think shorter and even import some stills of the product into the video to save video time. Now I am ready for my soup. I like it really hot. LOL

You are going to rock the YouTube world.

Dick I make a killer onion soup via Thomas Keller's Recipe from the Bouchon Cookbook....now on a side note I am not a fan of videos and I always look at the videos and if the time is longer than 2.5minutes I just move on, please do not take this the wrong way just as my input about the length...since I do love cooking I will come back and look at it some time later...

Hi Dick! Sorry for the alphabet spammer comments above. Whether bot or a very bored and dispicable person I'm not sure, but it was a link follow from my post that brought them here. Hope all is well! Reminiscing about old times in video class and the great job you did. Catch you later! :) Just wanted to say hello
