Showcasing the Golden State

One of the AR contests for the month is a 'Showcase your state' contest, with a challenge to showcase your state in one picture.  That is a tough challenge for such a large state!  California truly has it all.  The term 'something for everyone' must have been coined describing life here, and though I've lived here only a short while, there is more than I could ask for here in California.

As an east coast transplant, I know many people from other places think of California and instantly think Hollywood, celebrities, and materialism unseen in much of the country - what most people don't know is that this is a very small part of our state (and while some love it, it may be my least favorite part of the state - taxes notwithstanding).

If you're into art & entertainment, we have cities that offer everything you can imagine, from fine arts to music, attractions and architecture to fine food, art & entertainment abound in California.

History buff? There's plenty of that as well - there are still remnants from the gold rush throughout the mountains in California, and in some areas, people still pan for gold (and find it!) today.  3 US Presidents called California home, do you know which ones?

Outdoorsy type?  There's no better place to live - with huge, gorgeous mountain landscapes just a short drive from beautitul (and some famous) beaches, California has a climate for everyone.  In fact, in just one day's hiking you can start standing next to a cactus in the desert & end atop a snow-capped mountain.  We also have a little, somewhat well known outdoor attraction known as the Pacific Ocean.

Sporting events are also found all over the state - California has 5 professional baseball teams, 4 pro basketball teams, 3 NFL teams, and 3 pro hockey teams.  From San Francisco to San Diego, there's a game going on somewhere nearby.

Another little known fact to outsiders like myself is that California is actually pretty affordable.  Sure, there are some oceanside towns & downtown properties out of reach for the average American, but not far off the beach or outside of the city there are many towns that provide affordable living & the wonderful California lifestyle.

I've yet to explore Central & Northern California, so I can't shed too much light on all the state has to offer, but I know some fellow activerainers will provide more than ample info on plenty of other reasons California is a real gem of a place to call home.  The picture below sums up what I like most about California, the natural beauty - taken from the mountains outside of San Diego, you can see the ocean, but as is sometimes the case here, it's hard to tell where the sky ends & the ocean begins!

I've been to California a couple of times and neither time did I get to Hollywood or take anything that had to do with Hollywood.

I love your state. The weather was wonderful.. we drove up highway 101 and enjoyed the grandest views.  On one of those trips we spent two days in San Diego and so enjoyed it.  On that trip we spent several hours at the San Diego zoo...

Twice I have been to California!

I went swimming in the Emerald Pool above Vernal Falls in Yosemite.  I ate at Fisherman's Wharf, and drove down the street that Steve McQueen used to film "Bullitt".  I've surfed at Black's Beach.  I drove to Pebble Beach, and to Hearst Castle.  I went to a Hollywood Premier, and did a 360 in the intersection of Hollywood and Vine!

Jon - getting a good grasp on SoCal, looking forward to more exploring!  Thanks for the comment.

Kathleen - thanks!  I'm only discovering the tip of the iceberg, but I love it here so far.

Judi - San Diego is one of my favorite areas, so beautiful there.  I love the drives, too - the views make traffic not seem so bad

Barbara - it really is a small world, I've met a few people from the same area as me back east, thanks for the comment!

Fred - sounds like you definitely spent the 2 trips well.  I can't wait to explore the northern/central parts of the state - Yosemite is high on my 'to do' list.

Rebecca - thank you for stopping by - the views are some of the best I've seen anywhere.

The problem to speak about a State like California and or Texas is the sheer size and all the stuff one can cover. Northern California alone is tough to cover let alone the whole state. We love going into the Bay area, wine country and south out of San Francisco. So many great sights and things to do. Thanks for your blog as you did a good job.

John:  I've only been to California once ... near the San Diego area.  LOVED what I saw and hope to return.  Trying to encapsulate what makes a state great, especially one as diverse as California, definitely would be hard.  I'm finding much the same in regards to Illinois ...

Enjoyed your pic!

You know, John, i never thought of California as 'affordable', but you are right! If you not in a major city, it can be affordable:)

And it is so true that living here is it much more than Hollywood and celebs. For me Lalaland is: sun, ocean, diversity of cultures and art, and traffic( worst part:)
