Changing Times and the Elderly Homeowner....

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Sotheby's International REalty

I was raised to respect my Elders.   My Parents took great care of their Elder relatives.  It wasn't an obligation, it just was ... their generation took care of their elders.   So, now there is a generation of Elders putting their homes on the market, moving into assisted living or downsizing.   Moving because of health issues or because of financial concerns.  Where are their kids?  Who is their advocate?   I took a listing yesterday of a lovely home.   A home full of generations of memories.   The couple still obviously in love.  So tender and gentle with each other but facing together her Alzihiemers.   The process was full of laughter and tears.   Clearly not an easy move for them because it means so much more than relocation.   This is when we, as professionals, need to exercise great care and facility.   Connecting this couple to services that will help them long beyond their changeof location.   I was struck by his tenderness...toward her.   I was touched by her knowing that her life is over as she knows it.   I was tickled by what amused her... her shell collection which she is noticing now after years of neglect.   The things she bought back from a trip in her 20's.   Yes, I will sell there house.   But I know that I have taken on more than just a listing here....

Very touching post!  I have similar clients.  I helped them pack and sort through their memories.  I even held two moving sales for them.  They moved to a senior facility and their still has not sold.  It is empty and it's sad.  But, only I know this.  Prospective home buyers and open house visitors look at the home as a place to build their own memories and raise their family!
