I Forgot to Log In

I can’t believe I forgot to log in on ActiveRain. I always do. Daily. Never miss, or haven’t for as long as I can remember.

Jeff at Queen's Bath on Kaua'iBut it happened.

More than once. In fact 5 times while I was on vacation in Kaua’I (more on that later) over the last 9 days.

I went off pledging to myself that I would try to unplug while I was away…something that I am normally not able to do well at all.

I didn’t set a specific goal, but the intent was to NOT check or respond to email all day long or to write multiple posts while I was supposed to be enjoying some well deserved time off. It was amazing (the trip), and not logging in regularly was less painful than I thought it would be. Perhaps because I had made the commitment, but also keeping busy enjoying Kaua’I made it easy.

And business was actually easy to manage (with coverage) as things did not go haywire as they so often do just as you are leaving.

I didn’t even use my laptop for 2 full days – almost a record since being in Mexico last fall where NO wifi made abstinence a necessity. OK, I did carry my phone around a bit.

So I learned that, yes, I can do this when I need to.

And I learned that I should unplug more often.

I also know that getting away is really important for personal reasons, but it also makes it easier for me to step away from the computer when I get away rather than being at home.

I learned the world did not fall apart by my not logging in, responding to comments, and commenting, although I confess I did a lot of Facebook updates…mostly photos…which helped with my tech fix throughout the day. Plus it was lots of fun.

Now to catch up on my logging in, posting and commenting.

Jeff, it doesn't sound like your forget to log in. It sounds like you chose not to!! It is hard because we are used to constantly checking our voice messages, texts, emails, fb updates, etc. So glad you found that it made a difference when you didn't do that constantly!! Can't wait to read about your trip. Just this one photo you posted here looks wonderful.

Nina - you are right on target, in so many ways. It was a tremendous time away, and I'm glad to have been able to disconnect. Many lessons here. Check out my next post.

Sheila - it was a fun and valuable lesson in many ways. We continue to learn, don't we?

Jeff
