I need to take a vacation just to clean the clutter in my house so I can see what color things really are. I've lived with my house without any changes for about 11 years now... I'm ready to make some serious changes in color.
Do it Tammy! I always have a few projects going on.. It starts with one idea which turns into a vision for a whole room.. I love seeing how things come together and my vision becomes reality.
Andrea, I felt your house with the writing of your blog. Loved every bit of it and feel as if I got to be with you & your girls for a moment in your sactuary. Awesome!
Wow, great thoughts about the home, Andrea. Love your last quote...
"Through pouring our souls into our house, it's become our home, a place that welcomes us warmly every day."
Andrea, years ago, my in-laws moved from their home. I loved that house, but when I went back to it, it was empty, barren and souless. I realized it was the people in it that made it special (even with all of the fun and creative touches). I'm sure yours is much the same.
Andrea, my soul is a little eclectic I think, but I am attempting to bring our house back to where it started in some respects. The last few days I have been returning the front entryway door to what it used to be---a center door with side lights. In the 60's someone moved the door to one side and put in this giant piece of wavy glass in place of the side lights---so out of character. The big problem with making your home totally "home" is that you never want to go anywhere ![]()
Andrea, We can relate! Very little about our home is the same as when we bought it 20+ years ago! And you wouldn't suspect from the outside that we've added the touches inside that we have, so someday when it's time for us to be the sellers, we hope the buyers appreciate the years of work involved.
I have a metal cup and spoon framed in my kitchen that were the only things saved from a farmhouse fire in our family in the 1800s.
Being a home inspector and noticing details, I see your nickname is Drea. Cute!
Great post, Andrea! And just to quote Benjamin Franklin, "a house is not a home unless it contains food and fire for the mind as well as the body."
By the way, that burned farmhouse was not far from where you live now! The way I figure it, the farm is now a parking lot that surrounds a big office building out Rt 29 before you get to Laurel!
I just bet your home is absolutely beautiful inside (as you are) Andrea :)! I like vintage too...oddly enough though, I don't have a huge decorating style in my home...maybe some day :)!
The last time we painted our home, we went room by room instead of an overall palate. Very funny that the last room we painted was our girls bathroom. When it was finished it looked like a color circus. Needless to say we needed to take a step back and redo some of the rooms.
Beautiful post, Andrea.
Yet, I think, there is more than colors. Sometimes, you enter the beautifully decorated house, but it feels empty and cold. The energy? The house become a home when the owner gives it some love.
Good post. Your home definitely needs to feel like home, not a hotel. We are creatures of comfort and find peace and solitude by feeling in harmony with where we live. A home is part of us as much as we are a part of it.
Wonderful post, and so true. I'm currently tryiing to decide what colors I want to color our "mud room" (which isn't really an official mud room). I'm having such fun ruling things out, and can't wait to see what I come up with.
Thank you all! I appreciate your comments and am happy that my blog post resonates with many. I'll try to stop by all your blogs over the next few days.
@Margaret: I've added it to my calendar!
@ Jay: fascinating story! That has to be right at the intersection of Rt 29 and 198.. close to one of my favorite restaurants, Seibel's!
Homes are where memories are made. It's important to make your home truly your own. Getting to know what colors make your heart smile and that really enliven your sense of well-being, what colors calm you.. Great post, Andrea!
