Who's Ready For Some BBQ..And..Politician's???
2013 Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church Barbecue
11400 Mallard Creek Road
Thursday, October 24, 2013
10 a.m. until 6 or 7 p.m.
If you look at the Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church barbecue as "just a church barbecue" to raise funds for the church, it might not make sense when you see that they're set to cook up close to 13,000 pounds of pork, over 2,500 gallons of stew, and about 4,000 pounds of cole slaw. Just how many members does this church have? The thing is, with about 20,000 people expected to attend this year, this particular event goes way beyond just a church barbecue.
2013 will mark the 84th year of the Mallard Creek Presbyterian Barbecue, a staple of the fall season for many Charlotte residents. While this is, at its core, a church barbecue, it's most known for the local politicians who come out to “meet and greet" voters. Pretty much anyone who's on any local ballot will be here. In fact, there's even a "barbecue only" line, and a line for those wanting to rub elbows with politicians.
Mayoral candidates? They're here? City council? Yep. School board? Here too. Local politicians are pretty much expected to be in attendance, and close to 60 potential civic leaders were at last year's feast. But sometimes, the scope goes a lot larger. Then Vice President Dan Quayle was here one year. Elizabeth Dole came by during her campaign for the U.S. Senate. Ask anyone who's been around more than a year, and they'll tell you that conversing with candidates is just part of the ritual of the barbecue.
The barbecue is always held on the fourth Thursday in the month of October. Funds raised go to overall missions of the church, in addition to the original purpose of reducing facility debt. Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church itself is almost 190 years old. This year, $9 gets you barbecue, plus Brunswick stew, applesauce, Cole slaw and bread. Guests who eat at the site receive complimentary coffee, with other beverages available for purchase. You can purchase tickets in advance, but it's not necessary. There's plenty of food the day of the event. Visit the official site to find an order form.
