ASK AN AMBASSADOR: What's a Reblog & Should I Disable Comments?
I was searching the site for re-blogging information and this is what I found, so I thought it was so interesting and helpful that I would post it again my self. I hope other people find use for it again.
ASK AN AMBASSADOR: What's a Reblog & Should I Disable Comments?
Your first question might be "What is a reblog?". Basically, it's the best way to take full advantage of another blogger's work without risking copyright infringement. Basically ever Active Rain blogger gets to decide whether to allow a post to be reblogged or not when they make the original posting by checking or unchecking "Re-blogging" right after the POST TO: section.
Now I know, we still haven't answered the question, "What is a reblog?". Basically, it's the republishing of another blogger's post IN IT'S ENTIRETY to your own blog (minus the original blog post's comments). You get to write an intro, and as long as you enter enough characters (around 50) you'll get points (25 total). And you can do this up to 10 times a week and get 25 points each time. And fyi, you CAN'T reblog a MEMBERS ONLY post.
Now what you write in the intro to the reblog is where you make your mark and can still use the reblog tool to gain local business. Lead ins like "While this post was written by a Texas REALTOR(R), their point applies just as well ton our local market. We hope you appreciate the shared information and if I can help you buyer or sell a home in ________ please don't hesitate to contact us!"
Now in general, the concept of reblogging wasn't introduced so we could trash the original blogger and point out what an idiot they are for whatever opinion they expressed, or how messed up their local practices are compared to YOUR area. In general, the idea was to be a positive means of sharing information when another blogger has stated something so well you want to share, or know that you couldn't have said it better, so why try? REBLOG!!
Now once you decide to reblog, you have a decision to make regarding enabling comments on the reblog or not, and there are two radically different camps of thought. Some rebloggers figure that disabling comments forces the readers of the reblog to go back to the original blogger and give comments (and points) to the creator of the original work. We get that logic.
However, we've also seen comments that indicate readers would like the ability to comment on BOTH the original and reblog (especially if your wrote a good intro to the reblog), and it REALLY irrititates them to not be able to comment, even to the point of unsubscribing from you.
Of course you can always enable comments on the reblog, and what we've seen done regularly and might be the best of both worlds is the recommendation in the intro of the reblog to "please comment on the original writer's post", while still leaving the reblog open for comments too so you can have your own interaction.
Ultimately, it's your call, because it's your blog! And your reblog too!
Keep on Blogging!
