When it comes to real estate prospecting success, often the biggest obstacle in our path is ourselves! When we attempt something that makes us uncomfortable, it’s very common to become our own worst enemy when we try to make it a consistent habit in our lives. Some prospecting activities, like cold calling and door knocking, can take us way out of our comfort zones. Excelling in an uncomfortable situation and dealing with feelings of self-doubt are hard enough, but another challenge for me is simply doubting whether or not the new prospecting activity will yield results.
About a 6 weeks ago, I start cold calling for real estate leads, and actually got three new listings in fairly short order from this activity. However, after the dust settled from serving these new clients , did I continue to cold call right away? Yes, but not very consistently at first. Why? Because the next few days of calls I made didn’t yield any success at all. Human beings can be so fickle, and I’m no exception. What were my conclusions, whether I admitted them to myself or not? “This doesn’t work!” Even though I had taken three listings in a month that said otherwise! It’s truly amazing, when you think about it. When it comes to failures in my life, I have a great memory, but when it comes to successes, my memory is awfully hazy!
Anyway, I tell this story to remind myself and everyone else that daily prospecting needs to be a habit, just like working out, regardless of how we feel about it each day. When I don’t feel like my daily treadmill sessions are doing much to shed a few pounds (mainly because my daily processed sugar intake is way too high
) do I stop running on the treadmill? No – I keep it up, because I know my heart (and waistline) will thank me later. I need to employ the same reasoning with my daily prospecting habits, and right now, those include cold calling, door knocking, and blogging.
