Success in the Woods ~ Boom

Kudos, Dave Yonkers!  Every hunter's dream is to bag a deer whether early in the day or just before sundown or any time in between.  The weather the last few days has not been very conducive for hunting, but a late day clearing meant Dave was off to the woods across the road from our house.

Dave Yonkers

I heard the shot while racking leaves & hoped it was Dave's.  A phone call a few minutes later confirmed it and the rush was on to retrieve the deer before dark.

A long story shortened the deer is now securely hung in the barn & the hunter is happily watching the World Series.

But I know he will dream about the eight-point buck that is still roaming the woods.

I think someone is going to have a freezer full of deer meat. It is so lean and I really like it in chili and spaghetti.

Debbie, we can hardly wait. Yes, I plan to make chili soon. Thanks, Bob. Most of our venison from last year is gone so this will restock the freezer.

As much as I love animals, I could never be a vegetarian. Venison is delicious. Congrats on your take.

Mary!  I'm a California girl who used to know nothing about hunting.  Fast forward to when I met my New York born husband.  He loooooves hunting and talks about it often.  I've learned alot through the years and even get excited for when he goes back east to go hunting with his family.

That's awesome that your husband can just go across the way!  How convenient!  Hope he gets his eight-pointer!

Lisa, each year we look forward to putting venison in freezer to enjoy all year! Despina, Like you I grew up in the city, but now I live in the country and love it. I am glad that your husband can get back to hunt each.

We "could" take a deer in our yard, but we don't.  We just feed them and hope they make it through the season.  I'm not against hunting, lots of it in my family.  But my Donald doesn't and that's fine with me too.

I suppose it's all about the dance... as in Native Ameerican tales where they would hunt and thank and respect the animal.

Approximately, 10 years ago I hit a large buck while driving my Ford Splash down a winding road.  It was unavoidable and unfortunate.  Maybe some more hunting in that suburban area would help thin out the population and reduce vehicular collisions!

Tammy, Dave loves to hunt & fish, but my father did not.  Fortunately I like venison and all types of fish.

Laura, I love your analogy with Native Americans.  For them and the early settlers hunting was necessary for survival.  Most hunters respect the wildlife.

Roy, that's a deal, however, most of my venison recipes could use beef or chicken.  Venison pot roast is Dave's favorite with carrots, onions and potatoes.  Sometimes I add parsnips as I love the stronger flavor of parsnips.

Will, archery season starts Oct. 1 and goes until end of year.  Dave was hunting during three-day senior rifle season.  Yes, he is a senior.

Kwee, love the venison, however it is not totally free as we pay a processer to cut up & freeze the meat.

Joan,  Dave is one happy hunter.

Andrew, ugh! Control of the deer population for driver safety is one of the reason PA has hunting season each year. Be safe!

Good for Dave, and hope he can find the 8 pointer.  Claude killed an 8 pointer ar Snowshoe many years ago, but hasn't been hunting since.

And he is still talking about that buck. Congrats to Claude for getting his eight pointer. Guess that is why they enjoy each other's company.
