A Home Stager's DIY Inspiration
As a Montgomery County PA home stager, I always try to work with what's already in the home. Just a few simple changes can make a big impact. The same can go for existing furnishings that are old and outdated. There's no need to get rid of perfectly good furniture if you're willing to put in a little money, time and effort.
I volunteer at Habitat for Humanity's ReStore in Montgomery County PA. The ReStore is a great place to donate gently used or new home goods, construction materials or furniture. It's also a great place for this home stager to get her DIY inspiration. We often get donations of older furniture that's outdated by today's standards. So when I saw this China hutch standing against the wall, it was just begging me to bring it up to date.
China hutches can be overpowering, especially ones finished in a dark wood. They tend to look dated and dark. I wanted to lighten this hutch up so it could be used in today's homes with today's style.

-I started by sanding the hutch down to remove any gloss finish so the paint would adhere to the wood.
-Next I wiped it down with a damp cloth to clean off any sawdust.
-I chose a flat white paint for this piece. Since it's a taller piece, I didn't want to choose anything too bold.
-I spray painted the hardware in a glossy white.
-The final touch was the wallpaper used inside the hutch for an added touch of style. I took a poll on two choices of wallpaper and the white/cream stripes won, hands down. Because this piece was going to be used to store additional items, the neutral white worked well and won't compete with the other items placed inside.

Now this hutch is ready to be used in today's homes. So if you ever wondered where this Montgomery County PA home stager gets her DIY Inspiration, check out your local ReStore and see for yourself. The ReStore gets new donations in everyday so the DIY inspiration never stops.
