My third day of door knocking was pretty frustrating. I made contact with over 30 people - no one was a good seller lead and no one wanted to be kept updated on market activity. On the positive side, it only took two hours to make contact with 30 people. This surprised me, because I’ve heard from some cold callers that they’re happy if they can make contact with 15-20 people in an hour, which is what I accomplished by going door to door that day. I’m a fast walker, what can I say? ![]()
The uneventful nature of this door knocking day was discouraging, I’ll admit. But I really need to remember how this is all just a numbers game, and some days will lead to absolutely no leads while others will lead to a lot. From reading up on cold calling and door knocking, I really do believe that even the most uncharismatic, boring agent could get leads by door knocking if they knock on enough doors. People forget the massive numbers that they have to go through in order to achieve success in the sales world, and they get discouraged. In fact, I’ll be completely honest. A big reason why I haven’t started door knocking more frequently is because I’ve been doubting its effectiveness. Most days, I can’t work up the motivation to get out there and do it because of this doubt, combined with the fact that it takes me out of my comfort zone. Consistency is the key, and prospecting habits have to be formed regardless of how you feel about the actual prospecting process on a day to day basis.
Again though, on this third day I was reminded that at worst, door knocking is boring. It just isn’t as painful as my fears and hesitations have tried to persuade me otherwise. Each door knocking outing I make, after I get through about 10 doors, I settle into a rhythm and I feel like I’m “in the zone.” I feel much less emotionally attached to the results of my efforts and much more focused on the task at hand.
