A Trunk Full of Memories

By
Industry Observer

Under my bedroom window is a roll top trunk that I have had since I was a child (yes, it is really, really old!).  And it is a very special trunk.  I don't even remember if it was originally a Christmas present or just what, but I do remember that it was painted especially for me by one of my grandparents' neighbors - the local artist in their small Missouri town.

As kids, my sister & brother & I would walk along the back yard path from my grandparents' house to my great aunt's farm, and along the way was the artist lady's home.  She decorated this trunk for me, and also did one for my mother with a garden/flower motif (very fitting since gardening was a passion for my mom).

Childhood trunk

My trunk had special themes from nursery rhymes, and a clown face over the hasp (good think I didn't have fears about clowns, huh?), and of course, was personalized with my name.

The pictures on the lower front section include my grandparent's house, complete with my grandpa's prize goldfish pond, and my mom on her horse.

This trunk has been a treasured possession from childhood to my adulthood, and has made the moves along the way, always finding a special place in each home.

My mother used her trunk as a handy place to store wrapping paper, ribbon, gift tags and such.  But my own smaller trunk has always been a place where I keep memories - letters from family or from high school boyfriends; precious artwork from my son's kindergarden days; random things that remind me of people, places and events that hold a special place in my heart.  And that also have a special home in my trunk full of memories.

Thanks Jill! I've been working on clearing out excess "stuff" to position us to move one of these days - and realized how much sentimental value that trunk has to me. Not parting with it!!
