I was in a meeting where a chiropractor was sharing recently. I heard him say, "Sitting is the new smoking," and right there he had my attention. There are several news articles that have been coming out the past few years linking long term sitting to metabolic syndrome, heart attack, stroke risk, and overall death risk, among others. I started taking note of how much time I spent sitting. I sit down to eat breakfast and drink my coffee, sit in the car on the way to work, sit at work, sit at lunch, sit at meetings, sit at dinner, sit on the couch watching TV. I began to feel the pain of sitting (not sure if it is just mental or if I’m becoming more in tune with my body) every day but either way I knew it was time for a change. As I looked into it there are a lot of Standing Adjustable Desks that are phenomenal at helping with this problem you can check out the links below. The biggest thing is being conscious about it and getting up whenever you can. Walk around while on the phone, stand at a higher counter with your laptop, get a standing desk and be creative.
"Van der Ploeg and colleagues found that sitting for 11 or more hours per day increased risk of death by 40 percent, regardless of other activity levels. "
They are even stating that regular excersize doesn't make up for the negative effects of sitting.
Did you know that standing up triples your energy expenditure compared to sitting?
I'm looking into personally purchasing a stand up desk or building one. Check out the articles below as helpful resources.
