I’m Late to the Party, but Oh What a Party

I just migrated to an iPhone 5 less than a week ago.

I was a Blackberry user for 9 years in my business, then jumped on the Droid bandwagon about 22 months ago. I thought that change would be harder than it was, especially after being used to the Blackberry key board and all that entails.

It was not a big deal, and easier than I expected.

my new iPhone 5Oh, there was a learning curve of course, and my normal impatience with new technology – you know, wanting to know how to do it all right away and hating having to take time to learn. I wanted instant expertise and competence.

Things were good for about a year, then started to go downhill. I began having problems with apps freezing up or closing unexpectedly, among other little weird things. It was gradual, but deteriorated over several months. Ultimately I had to do a factory reset to “cure” the problems. That was OK except having to reload the apps I used. And I lost a bunch of contact info despite backing it up.

All was well for a few months and problems started all over again. Factory reset, etc., etc.

My frustrations finally got the best of me and I hit the Verizon store for a new smartphone. I was told my particular Droid was kinda “buggy” (no kidding) when I shared my experiences. Long story short – I went to the iPhone 5 (no 5S available), having talked to a bunch of people who were users/lovers.

So, yes, it took a while to get to the iPhone. Needless to say it has been a great experience, and an easy transition. Apps are working the way they should, it’s fast, and I am able to do so much more and quickly. Just started playing with the video (there seems to be an issue uploading directly to YouTube – any thoughts?) but the quality of video and photos is excellent. I’m still a little impatient that I don’t know how to do it all right away but that’s normal don’t you think?

I missed the AR webinar on apps.

Any favorites you are using that are “must haves?”

I still remember the first iPhone I saw years ago at an AR gathering in Del Mar when it first came out. Of course it was very impressive. Millions have joined the party. It just took me a while but glad I made it.

Congratulations on coming over to the dark side, Jeff.  There are so many apps I wouldn't know where to start, but you will not use half of them.  I am like you, gotta hit the ground running and I am sure you will be in the advanced category soon.  You can teach me some stuff.

Say it ain't so Jeff. I have a Black Berry Q10 and love it. I do not like IPhones. Sorry if you or anyone reading this gets mad but I think the Blackberry is a business phone, the IPhone a toy for kids. I have explored both and stick by my guns. My Q10 has a keyboard and I do not virtual keyboards. I have compared with the exact same picture taking on the Q10 and and the IPhone and hands down its night and day, 100% better with the Crackberry.

I hope you can give me a good argument as I love constructive conversation.

Have  great weekend.

The 5 is nice, of all the folks I know that upgraded to 5s, none said they liked it a ton better.

The ActiveRain app, of course.  I recommend Evernote, Waze, Skyview (if you're at all into astronomy), Scan Pages (turns a pic of a page into a pdf), and as Kathy recommended, Camera+

Iphone certainly has it's quirks too, but like you I'm too impatient to learn a new operating system so I deal w/the quirks I'm at least used to!

I am a recent convert as well. My fav apps are Shazam (for when you just can't think of the name of that 70's band playing on the radio), Timer+ and Genius Scan. And Siri ... LOVE LOVE LOVE Siri. I no longer type text messages, and she is so good at letting me know the scores of football games.

Jeff - iPhones are perfect but I'm a user of several years and would be lost without it.  Love the camera because it's always at my fingertips.  I'm going to check out Camera+.

While I am glad you are enjoying yours, I must say that I prefer my ANDROID. Not a fan of the Iphone Ipad etc products, but for sure they are better than the old blackberry. Best of luck to you!!

Jane - well I am being conservative to not download apps that I know, while coo, are not things I will use. I am an early adopter on some things, but not all. The iPhone being a good example. So far so good. I just have little patience for the learning process and don't want to take the time. Why can't I just KNOW it all right away?

Noah - well I was committed for a long time but found the efficiency was simply not there. And obviously as a company they are having some troubles, and have for some time. But the best solution is to use what you like, what works for you, and what you will use. There are always options

Kathy - thanks. Gonna check them out. I love Card Munch, which I think is still not available for the Droid.

John - thanks for the tips. I love Evernote but am not using it yet to the fullest advantage. More learning there.

Cynthia - GREAT tips, thanks. I love Siri too. I have to say I am still having fun asking silly questions just to see how she responds. She has an interesting sense of humor, but sometimes is just too literal. My dry humor escapes her. LOL

Norma - well I can see how I can become a BIG fan soon. Need to check on Camera+ also. But the video is still an issue for me

Janis - well I WAS happy but I just had TOO many problems, too many times. I had resisted the iphone from the beginning but over time, after talking to lots of people, decided it was the way to go.

Hi Jeff, I have the 5 and am waiting for the 6. The 5S sounds great but I am still under warranty with Apple Care, they I will upgrade again next year. I have never been sorry for going with the iPhone and coupled with the iPad, I am well covered. Congratulations for making a very good decision and if you ever need advise or support, Apple Care will impress you and you will understand why I have loved APPLE for so long.
