Uh Oh....Forgot To Have " The Talk" With My Dog!

By
Industry Observer
Reminders have been everywhere for days, making sure we all were aware that today is when we do the seasonal "fall back" an hour. And I have to say I do love being able to get up to hints of dawn breaking instead of pitch black nighttime (of course, I'm not quite as much a fan of how early it'll get dark now in the evening). But all in all, I went to bed thinking it'd be great to sleep in a little bit extra this morning. EXCEPT, I clearly forgot to have "the talk" with Daisy dog, explaining how we would all sleep in an extra hour, but she would still get her morning walk....just later. Six AM - which of course this morning was FIVE AM and I started hearing Daisy stretching and waking up. Five oh five AM and I could tell she was now standing next to the bed staring at me. So of course, I didn't open my eyes....surely she'll take the hint and lay back down? Well, no. Five fifteen and she is starting to nudge me with her nose and whine a little. "Not yet, Daisy. Lay back down". Right! She lay down for, oh, maybe ten minutes. Then she's back at my side, nudging AND licking my face. Whining more pitifully. And of course by now I am awake. Fine. Getting up, trudging downstairs to let Daisy out in the yard and get the coffee started. I guess I did get to sleep in a little extra. But clearly I forgot to have "the talk" with Daisy dog about the time change. Maybe next year....

Nancy, that's too cute. Even our pets need time to adjust to the time change.

Thanks! And yes, Daisy was clearly worried that she was gonna miss out on her breakfast or her morning walk if she didn't get me out of bed. LOL

My dogs sleep later than my husband, so no worries in the morning. But right now it's just after 4 p.m. and they're staring at me, wondering why I'm still sitting here.

Our neighbor comes to visit every evening at 5:00 - out at the shop - and they can hardly wait to get out there and greet him. Of course, that's also when my husband hands out doggie treats, so they have a double incentive for me to get my coat on and get moving.

And then there's the horse. He just came to live here over the summer, but ever since he got here I've been giving him grain at 6 p.m. Lately, since it's started getting dark, he's pracing around letting me know it's time by the time I go out at 5. If he has to wait until his tummy thinks it's 7 he may tear the fence down to come after me.

Guess I'll start feeding little Red at 5.

Marte, it's so funny to see how firmly our animals get into their routines - and changes just don't make any sense to them. So, yep, sounds like it's time to get your coat on and get with it!! :)

LOL Daisy!

I commented to my wife earlier that our CATS were at the back door for dinner, about an hour early.  They didn't get the memo, either.

Hi Fred! Yep, our pets have their own tummy clock that is not influenced in the least by what OUR clocks say. And they do know when it's time for food, don't they?

Too cute, Nancy!  I, unfortunately forgot to plant the seed in my own brain because I was up an hour earlier than normal!  Got a lot of work done though - and let the dogs out too!

Let's foresee the possibilities . and get results!

Nancy,  Thank you for sharing your critter story!  A few years ago we had a dog who would look at the clock when it was time for dinner.  When the time changed, she would look at the clock then at us as if to ask for an explanation.  They sure seem to understand more than we give them credit.

LOL Debe - I have to admit I was at least a little bit awake at the "usual" time....but would have happily tried to doze a little longer if I could have...

Oh Rebecca I love it! You are absolutely right that our pets understand a lot that goes on. I can't even move a suitcase around without our dog putting on her most mournful, pathetic face!

That internal clock just can't be turned off. I found I could only sleep in an extra 20 minutes. Bummer. I wanted a whole hour.

So true Debbie!  And then last night I was wondering why I was getting so sleepy so "early".  LOL
