ITS MY FAULT FOR HAVING $100

I went to a place of business for fun. I was going to purchase something and stood in line. The names and locations are not disclosed to protect the innocent. I wait and wait at this busy place and then my turn comes. Me and my wife, in our sixties, low key, honest decent people out spending money order up. I go to pay with a hundred dollar bill

WANTED

I am a criminal now. I am told with expression and attitude...WE CANT ACCEPT THAT. It is like I did something wrong and got caught. I am bothering someone. I have violated a policy or rule. Perhaps I am on the run from the law. Where does all this come from over a honestly earned 100 dollar U.S. legal tender bill?

POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE

There are no signs posted that explain NO BILLS OVER XXX. The place since I was standing in line took in a fortune so they had money. I was treated poorly for visiting with this place to do business. I stood there and said..what is the problem? I want to purchase, I have the money, I stood in line and I am ready freddy here...

THREE EMPLOYEES STARING AT ME

The person on the front lines called for back-up. She turned to her manager and asked what to do. The manager was staring at me and hesitated and then said. NO, NO we cant do that. I said why? I am ready, willing and able. It's you that cant perform here. More attitude from this group because I had the audacity to speak up...NO WE CANT DO THAT said with finality.

I have seen people do the following when a $100 is presented:

1. They hold the money up to the light. It is done in front of everyone so now everyone around knows you got money and your a potential counterfeiter. Breaths are held until the cashier lowers the bill and hits the register..WHEW..that was a close one. Everyone relaxes.

2. They immediately call for a manager and then all eyes are on you...A suspect being investigated. MANAGER..WE NEED A MANAGER like if there is a potential ruckus or a possible potential hold-up in progress brewing. Again, all eyes and a distinctive HUSH fills the air

3. They have these markers. The cashiers whoop them out, marks up the bill and if it doesn't turn a certain color you may have a chance. Your whole life is reduced to and reliant on a CRAYON of some sort...A CRAYON! Either way, you feel like a piece a meat

4. Loudly and in front of everyone so to let them know you are holding up a line, you are asked: Don't you have anything smaller? Emphasis on your finances in public is not to my liking.

100'S ARE EASY TO COUNTERFEIT

All I can say is that if these bills are not welcomed, why do they keep circulating them? I happen to know that the government is challenged every year with counterfeiters and that is why they have to change the design of 20,s and 100's. I also know that some business plan poorly and don't keep enough change on had either especially the weekends

IMPOUNDED AS EVIDENCE

However the last person that should have to deal with this issue is the wage earner, customer or consumer. You want the money or not? I happen to know however what happens if you get stuck with a counterfeit bill. They take it away from you and you are out the money. I had it after I deposited monies into a bank using hundreds days later too.

HOW DO YOU KNOW IT WAS MY $100 BILL?

Someone paid me in hundreds and I went and deposited them. Days later I get told I am short money in my account. Impossible sez I. I just deposited hundreds of dollars. Well one of them was a counterfeit. Okay, give it back and I will go tell the person who gave it to me. Cant do that. Your out of luck. How do you know it came from me I sez? Am I the only one that deposited 100's? We are reasonably sure it was you. The bank held their position. I am out the money.

THE ($100) BUCK STOPPED HERE

I went to the store who gave them to me and they went "deer in the headlights" WHY? I explained I was out the money and what happened and if they admitted anything, then they would be out. They don't remember is how they stood and they wouldn't have done that after I wanted and asked for another $100. We paid you. It was like musical chairs using money and when the music stops, who ever has the phony bill loses...that be me

Richie...what an insightful post about an all to common occurance!

Can't believe the bank, but then again, when were banks ever for the people.....

I do sometimes understand them asking for something smaller as you clean out their change, but to simply turn away business because you HAVE MONEY!!!

Wow.

Richie - it's amazing, isn't it? If we have $100's, people assume they are counterfeit. Oh, and you can't use pennies either.

This is so true -- I don't like to get $100s as change from anywhere because you're right - it's so hard to actually SPEND the money, and we really are made to sometimes feel as though we're a criminal.   Sometimes there's also a grimace about having to give back so much change (heavens forbid that you might buy a $51 item with a $100 and they need to give you $49 back.)

geez.

Richie: Great post and that is exactly what happens. Businesses should post "nothing over $20 accepted". Soon you will go to a store and NO CASH will be accepted. Funny thing, there are probably more STOLEN CREDIT CARDS out there than there are FAKE $100 bills.

Sorry for your cash problems Richie, I always enjoy those rare occasions when I have a bit of big cash in my pocket, especially since my plastic cards seem to be not working more often than they do work, the stores keep blaming my phone for doing something to the magnetic fields or something like that.

Maybe it is time to go back to the system of my youth when the storekeeper kept a little notebook under the counter and wrote down your purchase amount and once a month you brought in a check.

Sounds like you need a new and more honest bank.  Did you demand paperwork from the secret service showing proof that these bills had been in your possession, maybe fingerprint proof.  After all, are you not entitled to innocence until proven guilty?

Hello Bob...your comment has legs. More and more burden is put on the average guy out there even the ones that play and abide by the rules. We were not meant to be governed by laws and rules but instead the heart was meant to lead us. Since we are losing heart, we automatically gain lack of trust and we are forced to prove we don't lie, write bad checks or keep our word. Proof that we dont? BRING BACK: Yes to the neighborhood grocer, the good neighbor and the guy who says...Don't worry about it, we will work it out...Big business when it turns cold...is ruthless business

It is legal tender and they have to take it.  However, I always hate getting a bunch of $20.00's at the ATM and then having to stop and buy a coke or something.

Gene...Yes to your comment. Trying to make them take it makes me look like the bad guy. Its tricky Gene. People fear assualt or robbery now a days. someone arguing is a red flag.  Hey, I hate big bills and small purchases but what are we all complaining about anyway? Gosh...its money and its buying something.

Richie, Your post was timely. I'm always embarrassed to offer up anything higher in value than a $20. When I get big bills, I turn them into the bank for twenties, but the other day I had some trash hauled away and it came to more than I expected, so I reached into my emergency cash and I actually hesitated about handing over a $50 bill. I felt like I was committing a crime. They took the bill without a problem.

Hello Gail...Amazing these little pieces of green paper and how we respond to them. You know Gail, they used to have 1000 dollar bills at one point. How do you cash that anywhere?
