Ground breaking at Arroyo Seco

“Are you proud of Arroyo Seco?” Marge, an Arroyo Seco owner asked me this morning. I paused before responding. “Yes, I am. Giving birth to this neighborhood, as you know was no easy task, but our development team, Dan and I were committed to delivering our vision for what a neighborhood should be. And, now, 20 years later, look at what we have.” Tom and Marge are “original” Arroyo Seco home owners for whom the development team built their home, just the way they wanted it.

On any given day, one can walk around the neighborhood and pause to chat with one the many friendly folks who live at Arroyo Seco. Asked how they like living at Arroyo Seco, Nancy Cohen replied "We looked at Arroyo Seco every year for 10 years as we vacationed in Sedona, wondering what it would be like to live in such a beautiful place. Now we know...it's friendly, easy and comfortable and waking up to our view of Thunder Mountain every day is magical." Carol Chaput had this to say " I like living in Arroyo Seco because it reminds me of college and the dorms.  Not sure if that is good or bad but anytime I go walking the friendly neighbors invite me in for coffee or tea or just to chat.  They are so wonderful."

No one would know it today. The folks that were present more than twenty years ago have long forgotten the real life struggles the development team were challenged by; securing the needed zone change, securing development financing during the savings and loan crisis, a recession, holding cost over-runs… and a commitment of more than fifteen years to Arroyo Seco’s  success. One by one, each hurdle was tamed and in 2002, ten years after the doors to the first model were opened, the development team was able to hand over the keys to the final new home owner and proclaim the neighborhood “sold-out”.
