Ut Oh.....Craig's List changes the game.

Real Estate Agent

I, like most Realtors, rely on Craig's List to market my listings and to generate buyer and seller leads.   Recently, changes have been made that will change the way we use this tool to drive leads.

The first thing I noticed is that we were required to start entering a ZIP Code.  Not a big deal.

Then, HTML photos and anchor text were not allowed.  Hummmm.....  Ok, still not drastic, but a little more of a pain.  The kicker came when ads could not have any type of clickable link in them.  STOP THE PRESSES.  Realtors freak out here.

This is the thing, I am not going to let this stop me.  I will still use Craig's List.  You know why?  Because a lot of other Realtors won't!!  The postings on my local CL are about a quarter of what they were last week.  A lot of consumers use Craig's List to search for homes.  I am going to make sure that I add the long dirty links, talk about my business in each ad and trust that the consumers looking at my ad will copy and paste the link.  Consumers will have to cut and paste the links in each and every ad they see...this isn't specific to one person, it effects everyone!

When the dust settles, Craig's List may change their rules a few more times.  In the meantime, I am going to keep plugging away, and leverage this thing call a telephone to generate some business.

Adapt to use the platforms for the weed and feed the best you can with what you have. Keep marketing, the exposure ray gun buzzing with your media streams.

Steven, I would be interested to know how your Craig's List traffic varies.

Andrew, exactly!  I will keep plugging away and do what I do.  More traffic for me once everyone drops out.

I was disappointed initially, but then realized some agents will not continue, I think some consumers will copy and paste the link if they are interested in the properties the post is advertising.  I will continue to post to Craigslist despite my disappointment.

I agree with you, Cathy.  At first I was a little put back, but quickly realized that it make getting leads that much easier.

We are having a CL class in our MC today. I'll be interested to see what he has to say on this new little hiccup to posting on CL.
