Green Ideas Take Time to Go Mainstream- Let's Get Mikey to Try It

Let's Get Mikey to Try ItLet's get Mikey to Try it! He Likes It! Sometimes a new concept is slow to take hold in business. Even if it makes sense and it might be good for business, no one wants to be the first to try it. Just like the classic Life cereal commercial where the two boys won’t try it because it’s good for them. They want Mikey to try it first, then they change their minds after “He Likes It!!”

Green Ideas Take a Leader To Show The Way

Sometimes, it just takes one organization to show a concept has business value. And if it’s a major corporation putting up money, then it’s not just an ad slogan.

Next Gen Home by LennarLennar Next Gen Home Lennar Next Gen Home In this light, it is encouraging that Lennar, one of the largest homebuilders in the country has announced its NextGenSM model – “The Home Within a Home”. The design incorporates separate living quarters – private bedroom, bathroom, sitting room and kitchenette – all within the single family structure.

While extra the space has many uses, it addresses the desire for “in-law” quarters for aging parents, which often involves separate structures, or apartments over a garage. The NextGen SM affords the privacy and independence many families want, with the enormous benefit of keeping the family together.

Floor plan Next Gen Home - A good approach to Mikey's changing family needs

As noted in our earlier article in Gray is The New Green, a green approach to our graying population benefits us all: more efficient use of land, materials, and natural resources for utilities. Plus, there is the incalculable benefit of keeping elderly parents within the family unit and not in a nursing home. Even with the separate entrance, the price tag is more affordable than having a separate structure. With its extended usefulness and flexibility as the family changes and evolves, it also becomes a better investment for the homeowner.

Next Gen Floor plan

Lennar is to be applauded for their commitment to an innovative idea that provides us all with a payback. Homeowners win with a better investment. The elderly have a place of privacy and independence within the family. The community benefits from the efficient use of land, materials, and energy – and having senior members in our lives. So, just as Mikey tries it and “He Likes It”, more families will be demanding green designs like the NextGenSM.

I love that there is a new option to home design that incorporates this private living space idea.  Not only would this benefit the aging population this may also be a good option for families with adult children living at home or people who frequently have company stay with them.

Good morning, Debb - this is such an important concept facing many areas of our country.  It's good to see such a large homebuilder such as Lennar taking such a leading role to further showcase multi-generational living.  The same goes for the live-work concept that is taking place in many markets.   It will be good to see both expanded with further innovations.    Good post.

This is a great concept. It can be very helpful for people in the right situation. It would be great if these private quarters could be easily renovated for the next owner, who might not love the layout.

Hi Donny - yes you are right. It's a flex concept.

Hi Michael - it is a concept facing many. I agree with the live/work concept too.

Hi Brad - that's true Brad, but perhaps this plan might not be the best fit for those folks.

Good morning Debb.  Great information!!!  We are seeing more and more builders of homes as well as commercial go Green in our area.  With our awesome weather there is no excuse.  I have worked with some home builders that do say the money is a huge factor in deciding what areas they go Green.

Debb-this just makes good sense on both a financial as well as a personal level. Looking at the cost of long term care is out-of-site, in addition a chance to care for your family. Well done!

I like this idea Debb, basically a part time duplex, depending on whether the adjoining door is open or not.  I like the idea of keeping the family close, kind of Waltons style.

Hi Debb - Lennar really hit on something here. I know Belinda Spillman is working on these with Lennar in Aurora CO, and Mary & I want to get down there and have a look when we get a chance. I expect this concept will be very popular and some local builders are talking about offering something similar.

Debb, I really like this concept. I think the issue of aging parents and where they will live is a huge concern for a great many people. To find one level living close to your own home, in this case "inside it", is a great idea.
