Electric vehicles have been making a comeback over the last few years, with MoCo leading the way in Maryland. As recently as 2010, there was only one electric vehicle registered in the state. As of 2012, there were over 650! This rapid growth has brought an equally rapid response specifically within Montgomery County, with the greatest number of charging stations having been added in MoCo compared to the rest of the state.

Why such the surge in growth in our area? MoCo has been able to sustain higher economic growth compared to other counties in the state. This in turn has brought in more residents with higher education and wealth. These residents have been openly embracing an electric vehicle plan for want of a cleaner environment and healthier living. Add to this a tax incentive from the state in the form of an excise tax credit, and growth in this industry within MoCo was inevitable. .

The increased ownership of electric vehicles has naturally led to a growth of electric vehicle charging stations that have been installed across the county. Currently there are 29 public charging stations in the county, with an additional 9 private stations owned by companies for their employees. These stations give residents and visitors alike plenty of opportunities to travel freely knowing they can easily charge their car.

What a great step forward, electric cars are about equal to gas cars that get around 40 to 50 miles per gallon, all depending on how you calculate the numbers.
