I have lived in Springfield Missouri for several years and love what it has to offer. Springfield has rich history that many people do no know. For instance during the wild west era Wild Bill Hickock had a shoot out in the city square in 1865 resulting in multiple injuries. It is also known as the birthplace of the famous Route 66. Today Route 66 stretches from the Great Lakes to the Pacific. Most notably the Springfield area is recognized for its outdoor activities. The birth place of the famous Bass Pro Shops containing anything and everything associated with outdoors. Hunting is one of the main attractions in the Springfield area. Turkey, water fowl and deer are highly sought trophies. Typically most of this hunting occurs in the winter where winters can range from mild to very harsh. Deer season begins in the middle of November and runs through the end of the month. Turkey season runs concurrently but is archery and not firearm. Water fowl is divided into three areas of the state. The south starts in the end of November and runs to the end of January, middle starts November 1 and runs to the end of December and north starts the end of October through the end of December. General outdoor living, hiking, camping, biking and walking are very popular. The annual rainfall is generally around 44", providing ample water for springs, rivers and vegetation. Springfield has hundreds of tails and camp grounds to visit and explore. One very interesting fact about the area is Springfield sits largely on limestone formations. When you combine large amounts of rain and limestone over a long period of time you get caves. Wow do we have caves everywhere, waiting to be explored by both young and old.
