How I will Survive Obamacare

This is not a political post and I am not talking bad about our President. Regardless of what my political affliations, I am just sharing some of the high level points where it will affect my 2013 and 2014 income taxes as a result of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) also known as Obamacare.

My husband and I attended a seminar about Obamacare and its impact last night. Prior to that, we met with our tax accountant to go through our 2013 taxes and see how it would look like on our returns. So, the following I mentioned is only how it affects me personally:

We make a great income. We are on the higher level tax bracket (fortunately and unfortunately).

  • We will be hit with phase out personal exemptions
  • We will also be hit with a phase out itemized deductions
  • We will pay for a High Income Medicare tax that we've never paid before

At Obamacare, the information that was shared really went over my head but what little I got, this is how some will also affect my family and I:

  • We don't qualify for premium assistance credit (not surprising and I didn't expect to)
  • We *may be hit with additional medicare tax on unearned income which our "net investment income" on gross rents" (but most likely we could be considered an Active landlord, so it could be exempted)
  • Increased 3rd Quarter 2014 estimated tax payment by 173.5%!!!

How some Obamacare stuff affects other businesses:

  • Individual mandate
  • Corporate mandate
  • Small employer health insurance tax credit where it affects 30 or more full time workers

My brain just stopped accepting information from that point. It went bla, bla, bla. If you were with me, you saw blood coming out of my ears.

I've always been proud to live in America. I truly am. I'm also grateful to be here. But it seems so socialist and not encouraging entreprenuerialship.

Honestly, I felt bummed but what does a High-C do? I just keep on keeping on.

In your category Loreena, it seems like it should be called the Unaffordable Care Act cause you were better off prior to the new law.

Hi Loreena. Capitalism and Entrepreneurship has always been the American Dream for many. Socialism is taking us in the wrong direction. I am not sure what's going to happen to the America we all have such High Hopes and Dreams for, especially the Small Businesses. I think that only our Faith and Trust in God of Abraham, Issac, and Jacob will see us through what lies ahead.

Well, right now I am fine because my husband is still in the Military, so we fall under his health care, then we will both be retired and be able to get Tricare for retirees which, although expensive, is nothing compared to all that is going on.  I just praise God that we are fortunante enough to not have to worry about this at this point.

God willing they will fix what is broke but because there's so much politicking going on, it will be a while before anything happens IMO.

I spoke with my Mom today; she is 81 years old, her husband is 87.  They are in FEAR that Blue Cross will cancel them.  They are in fear that they will lose their doctors.  I know of other people - not just Senior Citizens - who are equally worried.

What kind of President - and what kind of Congress - would strike fear into the citizens?

God have mercy on America.

My experience has been horrible.  I will be honest with you, I am generally quite conservative politically and in most cases believe that people should get the health care they can afford, period.

With that said, I was like ok this may help me out.  I have not had health insurance as a self employed agent for several years.  I call every year and every year its the same thing.  Something has to give... do I want a roof over my head or health insurance?

So I looked into what was available to me under the Affordable Care Act.  The monthly payment(500+) is up 30% over what I was quoted last year.  But the crazy part was I have to pay $6000 in deductibles before the insurance will kick in every year.  So 12,000 dollars spent before I get any reimbursement from insurance.

Right now it continues to make more sense for me to have no insurance.  So now I will pay several thousand dollars I already don't have, in penalties to help susidize the folks that qualify for subsidies.

I just read today that 150,000 people in Massachusetts have lost healthcare do to the ACA from companies dropping the insurance coverage they have traditionally provided.

I don't want to turn this into a political debate.  But it should not be named the Affordable Health Care Act.

Definition of Affordable- that can be afforded; believed to be within one's financial means.  I think the intent was to get more people quality health insurance, not to have them lose it.

Maybe a better name would be Financially Devasting the Already Overburdened Middle Class and the The Just Getting By Act?

Hi Loreena. My health insurance premium is increasing 90.8% due to ObamaCare ObamaTax. My blood is boiling. Well Point Inc. which owns Blue Cross Blue Shield wrote the white paper for ObamaCare ObamaTax and they are clearly making bank.

Furthermore he calls it the "Affordable Care Act." If it was so "affordable" why are so many people LOSING their health insurance. I checked out his 2014 Fiscal Year Budget. From 2012 to 2016 he set out to increase our individual income taxes by approximately 45%. Our national debt has increased by approximately 85.87% since he took office!!! Yes... I am livid... which is an understatement.

Sadly many people will not "survive" ObamaCare ObamaTax. However I will not expound on that for now....

I also don't know what to do...

Most people must have health insurance or pay a fine. While the ACA went into effect Jan. 1, 2014, people have a grace period until Mar. 31 to buy insurance and avoid the penalty. The penalty in 2014 is $95 per person or 1 percent of income, whichever is greater. The penalty rises to $695 per person or 2.5 percent of income in 2016. (Penalties for children are half the amount for adults.)
