Realtor Reality: It’s Not Like HGTV ~ More Like High School All Over Again.

What Gabbi shared is real - about the REAL ESTATE industry. From a distance, it looks way cool. With the cars we drive and even the busy lives we lead. It must sound that we are successful, awesome and raking the money, right? The next time someone tells me, "I love people and I love looking at houses".... I will send them this article.

Sad to say, we projected wrong images of ourselves in real estate.

This is a post for the "Real Deals Of Real Estate" ... Let's Dish" contest.

Not sure about you – but my first couple years in high school were tough.  But after a couple years – and learning the high school dynamics – it became fun and dealing with the challenges got easier.

The same can hold true for getting into real estate – here are some things I didn't learn in real estate school:

Real estate school is just that – it’s designed to help you pass the test to become a Realtor. Most of what you learn won’t be used.

Money brings out the worst in people – this includes your clients, lenders and other agents.  You will see a side to people you have not seen before.

Your first sale or list likely will not be several million dollars (unless you are super lucky or already have a “prospect” lined up).  That leads me to the next point -

A prospect can and will buy from someone else.

A flexible schedule doesn’t mean what you think it does.

The quickest way to end family relationships is to represent them in a real estate transaction.

Many real estate agents are “frienimies” (friend –enemies) – they can be your friend – but are still going to look out for their best interests and many will climb over you to get business. It can be like high school all over again.

Your Broker Firm is a money making operation –  two points to know:

1)  Brokers are there to help you help them stay out of legal trouble – they are not there to hand you business.

2)  Brokers can take a good portion - or in many cases a huge portion - of your commission. And it can be really huge!

Paperwork – there is a lot of it, a lot to keep track of, a lot of legal stuff.  If you aren’t careful – you will fail to pass the paperwork test and that can lead to serious problems.

The good news is – if you pass the first couple years of real estate reality – you’ll probably do fine and the rest of your career will be rewarding with more pluses and more rewards than you could imagine!
