Colorado's Newest Attraction - Staunton State Park
After nearly 30 years of hard work and negotiations, Staunton State Park opened to the public earlier this year. My husband and I visited during its opening week and took a short hike to Davis Ponds and back. This short excursion simply wetted our appetite to return and see more.
The Park offers many well-marked trails and caters to all levels of visitors....hikers, cyclists, horseback riders and even mountain climbers. Elevation ranges from 8,100' to over 10,000' so be sure to take lots of water and plenty of clothing layers.
The weather on Saturday was exceptionally gorgeous as we arrived early (9 am) with the intent of hiking to Elk Falls Overlook which was 5.4 miles one way. An avid photographer, I was stopping along the way to photograph the lovely landscape. Even though most of the fall leaves had dropped from the trees, the scenery was lush and inviting.
Although I didn't make it to the overlook, I still ended up hiking a total of 9.5 miles of trails. For more information about the Staunton State Park.
