Well, Welcome Angela! Ranks are based on points. You get points for comments, posts, linking active rain to your website, inviting people, doing your profile, adding a pictures, etc.....

You can add associates (ie. people that you know on here or new friends or if you like their writing). People can add you as an associate as well. If you look at some members blogs, you will see a subscribe to blog button above their photo. This allows you to see their updated posts. The points are basically for competition purposes. It doesn't really matter where you are ranked. It is meant to encourage you to blog and to comment. And it does a great job at that. That is how you become addicted!!!

Angela: Welcome to active rain. This is Myspace, for old fogies! Ranks are based on point totals in your region of choice. You select associates based on your perception of who they are, and perhaps who you want to appear to be. The points are like points in online gaming or the like, it makes for an element of friendly, and sometimes not so friendly competition, but also there to demonstrate your commitment to the blogosphere in a very tangible way.

You may find it addictive...... This is a chance for you to share your experiences with other professionals in your field who are geographically disparate. You can get different perspectives and new points of view. You may not always like what you hear, but there is a quality of honesty that is enticing and refreshing

Angela - Welcome to Activerain and I hope you get much success from being in this warm and great community!!!  It's quite alright to be a newbie, we were all one at first, 1st tip I might give you is to lay off on the caps, in the online world it portrays you as yelling :) so to answer you questions

Go here for Ranks/Associates -----> http://activerain.com/action/default/welcome

Go here for points -----> http://activerain.com/action/default/scoring_faq

Go here for blogging basics ---> http://activerain.com/blogsview/209646/Blogger-Startup-Kit

Myspace is a more of a personal/social network

Facebook was more geared for schools/work and is now transitioning to a more personal/social network

Activerain is a pure real estate network focus :)

Finally why is this so addicting? Well besides the constant search of new blogs, ideas for blogs, point system, increasing business and the ultimate sales person inside of urge to promote ourselves, knowledge, and bottom line showmanship...I guess the only way to tell is to just see for yourself.

Welcome once again :)

Welcome Angela. The more points, the higher your ranking. If you narrow the search to, instead of your state, your county, if you have more points, your profile will be higher up on the page. The general public may see you on the sister site -Localism - if they are, for example, in another state and are looking for an agent in your state, and in your county, if you are at the top of the page, you will be seen more.

Just keep using the site - you will figure it out. Of course, the real reason is to learn from others, and to have others learn from you. What works, what doesn't in the real estate business.

There are some who just post their company or business info and don't really blog. That is cheap in my opinion. I do it for the fun, for the learning, for the social aspect, and the more you blog, the more traffic you eventually get to your website. I am not a newbie and have a lot to learn. It is addictive for me cause I enjoy the stories. Good luck, and remember when you need an insector in New York, don't be ridiculous, call Meticulous!

LOL about the point thing.  Your question begs an answer none of us have been able to provide.  Why??  Oh and yes.. why is this so addictive?  We all seem addicted to points that don't mean a thing except among ourselves.. which isn't much.  :)

As far as the "Rating" thing I think you're talking about page rankings.  Just type in "Page Rank" in Google (or here for that matter) and you'll find more than you want to read on the subject.

Welcome aboard.  Hang out a while, put out some of your thoughts once in a while and you'll start to have fun.  Only then will you begin of get what's going on here.

Not that I do either though.

Take care..

Angela,

I'm a newbie too!  All I know is that through blogging and answering questions I have gone to 6th in my area.  It has greatly improved my search position on google.  If you search Marion Landing for example which is a subdivision in my area I come up as #3.  I already got a lead for a buyer for that subdivision!!!  I don't know too much about myspace and facebook so I can't answer that.  Associates are people who like the things you say or you like the things they say.  I would also encourage you to not use capital letters.  Once you start seeing your position going up and you start getting leads off of the Rain you will be hooked and there is no returning!  Best Wishes and Welcome Aboard!!!

Angela,

I am new to "Rain" also.  Just a month or so.  I have gotten wonderful information that I have used in meetings and shared with other agents in my office.  On occasion, I have just asked for an unbiased view on a problem.  The folks are great and you will learn lots from them.  They are the cream of the crop, so to speak.  As far as points, blogging is the way to promote yourself and your business.  I have moved to #2 in my area.  Points are not as important as the blogs.  It will make you visible to the public in the search engines.  Welcome!!!

Angela, I have started posting some tutorial that are designed to help the newbies in getting through it all. Even though there is a lot to take in here, it will get simpler, I promise. Even the addiction gets easier.

Thanks for the add as an associate. I look forward to seeing a lot from you in here. If I can ever help you in any way here, let me know.

Hi Angela-Thanks for the acknowledgment.

Happy to hear your market is active. Baltimoe is active too, but , very slow.

So I'm doing more aggressive marketing. It will take awile to work, but I expect good results.

Thanks for your FSBO story-if only we didn't have to deal with all the people, before we can get a good lead or two...
