Mission Valley, San Diego, is a great area for a first-time homebuyer. Mission Valley is composed of primarily hotels, shopping centers and condo complexes. Mission Valley originally began as a settlement for the Spanish. The Mission de Acala and the Presidio of San Diego were originally located in Old Town. Mission de Acala was moved to the easterly end of Mission Valley because water was easier to obtain and farm land was fertile in the valley.
Mission Valley began modern development in the 1950's when the first hotel was built along Hotel Circle. Mission Valley Mall opened in 1961, and Fashion Valley Mall followed in 1969. Fashion Valley Mall took the place of Westgate Park which was the minor league ballpark for the original San Diego Padres.
Today Mission Valley is a hub of housing, shopping and transportation. The San Diego Trolley runs through the valley via The Green Line. Interstate 5 bounds Mission Valley to the west. Interstate 15, 805 and State Route 163 criss cross Mission Valley.
As housing developed in Mission Valley, condos were the natural choice due to land constraints and mixed use with office buildings and retail shopping. Condos in Mission Valley stretch from the far west where the 92110 zip code meets the Mission Valley 92108 zip code. Older condo complexes were once apartment buildings that were converted to condos, and the newest development, Civita, is being built on the north side of Mission Valley where sand and gravel quarries were located. In fact, the Civita area was once called the camel's back due to the topography. Park Villas, located at Friars Road and Mission Center Road began life as the Apple Apartments in the early 1970's. There is a lot of interesting and entertaining history in Mission Valley.
