Gender Identity Added to NAR Code of Ethics

An article in the Daily Real Estate News, posted on NAR's RealtorMag site, reports that

Article 10 of the NAR Code of Ethics now reads as follows:

"REALTORS® shall not deny equal professional services to any person for reasons of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, national origin, sexual orientation, or gender identity. REALTORS® shall not be parties to any plan or agreement to discriminate against a person or persons on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, national origin, sexual orientation, or gender identity.

REALTORS®, in their real estate employment practices, shall not discriminate against any person or persons on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, national origin, sexual orientation, or gender identity."

It's good to know that NAR acknowledges and does its best to promote the idea -- and the reality -- that equality and equal treatment means, at least, equal protection for everyone under the rules of behavior proscribed for professional conduct in our industry. Props where props are due: congratulations and thanks to NAR.

Some things like gender are best left alone. I wouldn't begin to try to ask or judge because there are way too many variables now. I remember pumping gas a few months ago when a woman came out of the store and looked me in the eye. She had a full beard and breasts. In looking a little closer she walked more like a man and was dressed boyish. I had no idea. Something was clearly in the works.

Brad:  In the real scheme of things ... at any level or in any situation, does it really matter?  Nope.  Business is business and everyone deserves a shot at owning a home.  It's great that NAR is addressing this.  But hopefully at some point in the future, the extra attention and addressment will no longer be needed ...

Funny, Debbie. There are a lot of variables!

That will be a splendid day indeed, Gene!

As for me... I'm not really in love with NAR these days... but this certainly is a stand up idea,  my questions is what difference will it make...  folks that want to discriminate will do so regardless of what NAR tells them or doesn't tell them...

OK this is a new one, but thought it was covered under sex and sexual orientation.

Good for them, but as a previous posted stated, it will not prevent those that discriminate from doing so.  Sad but true.

I agree with Gene, it's great that NAR promotes the idea but equal rights should not be an idea, it should be inherent.

I agree with you and Gene, Gina. . . except that this acknowledgment does matter. I think Gene means that it shouldn't make any difference since we should all be treating people equally in the first place.

I hope Beth and Jill hope that it matters as well, despite their "realism". I believe that Fair Housing has helped, and that the Code of Ethics has helped, to promote fairness in housing. Adding gender identity should help that protected class just as adding race or sex has helped those protected classes.

Brad society has come along way in a short period of time in accepting all kinds of different beliefs and lifestyles.  It's all good. And like Gene said - hello - what difference does it make - be of service to buyers and sellers.  As for NAR...that is another subject entirely with the lastest 'roll out' of their top agents program,  that nobody I know of thinks is fair and equitable to over 90% of NAR members is quite frankly discrimination as well.  We'll see how that subject plays out.

Quite so, Anna. I concur with you that the institutional backing of some members over others is discrimination, and I will stand with you to correct that unfairness.

Hi Brad -- this seems like a no-brainer but I'm glad NAR has made it official.   As others have commented it's good to see something positive coming from the organization that has recently made some interesting(tongue firmly held in cheek) decisions.
