Cold Shower Anyone? BRRRRRR!

Industry Observer
A nice hot shower is one of those little simple pleasures....and HAVING hot water is one of those things most of us kind of take for granted. Well, right up until there ISN'T any hot water coming out of that shower head! Uh oh, this is not a good thing! So, a trip to the basement to check on the hot water heater & see WHY it's shirking it's duty. Hmmmm, pilot light is out. OK, who knows why it's out, but restart all should be well.....right? Or not. Hours later....Still no hot water. And the little blinky light is not blinking it's "I'm normal...everything OK" code, but a problem code instead. Rats - this hot water heater is not even a year old! (Although the thought crosses my mind that the one it replaced made it to the nice old age of 20 before it decided it was done for, so maybe this new one wants to average things back out). A phone call to the number on the hot water heater connects me to a very pleasant woman who listens to my tale of woe, and says it likely means the gas valve is failing & needs to be replaced. OK. Always good to identify the problem. knew there'd be a catch, right? Yes, the unit is under warranty so the replacement will be covered. But no, the valve needed is not something we can go pick up at the store where we bought the water heater. Yes, it can be shipped, but quickest delivery would be Tuesday & shipping would cost $30. Plan B is that local technicians may have the part in stock. (and oh, yes, I did "innocently" ask if that meant this part frequently needs to be replaced....) One of the technician's on her list is a company I know & trust, so hopefully they will have both the necessary part - and an open window in their schedule - SOON! Of course, they're not actually open on Sunday. OK, ready to call them when they open in the morning at 7 AM, with fingers crossed. And in the meantime? Since I don't have any client appointments today, I'm thinking a super speedy & COLD clean up is just going to have to be enough - that cold shower just sounds so darn COLD!!!

Not a good thing to hear on the weekend Nancy, I detest cold showers! Any day at that! If it is under warranty, shouldn't all parts be covered? Hmmm...brrr!

Wanda, the part is covered, but we either need to get it from a local technician (& just have them also do the install) or wait to have it shipped. It's just not one that Lowes or Home Depot stocks. So my hopes of a hot shower today look like they're gonna be dashed unless I go visit my son's (though if we can't get it fixed by tomorrow, I'll definitely be making that visit!)

On a hot summer day, there is nothing better than jumping into a cold spring or a cold stream.  But when you want a shower in November, cold water is NOT a fun thing!

I hope you get your water heated fixed!

I am definitely not a fan of cold showers, but I bet it would certainly wake you up in the morning.

Nancy last time we went throught this a local plumber solved the issue and there wasn't any costs and he came within that day or the next if I remember correctly.  Enjoy that hot shower at your son's house.....

Happy news - the repair guy DOES have the part & will be here by 2:00! Of course, meanwhile I'll be testing mind over matter and taking one more nice, bracing shower this morning.....thinking thoughts of hot deserts and blazing sunshine! Think it'll work?

Glad that you got your water heater working Nancy, it can be very time consuming to heat enough water on the stove.

Oh dear, I hate it when that happens Nancy. You know how the pioneer women felt. Glad your son's house is an option for you.

Recently, in our soon to be 7 year old home, the refrigerator needed a major repair $350, the microhood ($240), and the garage door spring was just replaced this morning ($389). ARGH!  None were under warranty. :(
