Nothing Should Ever Replace a Firm Handshake and a Smile
As cheesy as it sounds, this is the first we do whenever we meet someone know. We extend our hand and smile, saying "nice to meet you."
Regardless of what can (or may) happen in the future, at the moment, you are meeting someone new and there is a value in meeting someone offline as opposed to online. There is a value in feeling the strength of someone's handshake, their tone of voice, body language, how genuine their smile is.
You can be anyone you want online, in person it's a different story. In person you can't hide who you are, and there is a value in that. For better or for worse, we are who we are and it's important that we don't lose that component of human interaction that we achieve when we meet someone offline for the first time.
I'm not just talking about clients at this point, even though that is especially important to me. We can make all the deals we want over the phone, by email, through text messages but it all starts with that first meeting where I see who this potential client is and they see who I am.
Human interaction should be the cornerstone of any relationship, even if we are online, and there's a value in that.
I remember seeing a picture of a baby trying to swipe a magazine the other day because she thought it was a touch screen. Pretty soon, if it can't swiped it won't be worth it but human interaction can't be swiped.
Don't get me wrong, the Internet is great. In fact, it has brought along with a lot of good for business and keeping in touch. For me, however, the Internet, social media, etc. is simply a vehicle through which we make connections and then strengthen them offline in that first meeting. It should complement human interaction, not replace it, but some people have seen it as a substitution to human interaction.
We should try to get that handshake and that smile and interact one-on-one instead of immediately hiding behind a computer.
