I am in the process of replacing car and home insurance that I have had for 4 years. The company I was with really had not done anything wrong other than raising their rates every year. Each yearly rate increase was just below my tolerance level, but after 4 years I felt compelled to shop around.
Many talking heads will tell you that you should shop your insurance needs every 4 years or so. I found this to be quite true. After speaking with several companies I decided to switch. I will save a little over $400 in a year with the new policy. I suspect that in 4 years I will probably have to change again to lower my rates. You see, insurance companies entice you in with lower rates and then start stepping those rates up every year. Most people get complacent and don't change.
And a side note, I did the same with my natural gas provider. Remember, the provider is really just the billing and customer service company. Gas is gas, no matter who bills you for it. This change will save me another $400 in the coming year.
So add this to your list of things to do at the end of each year. Shop your insurance and gas/oil suppliers to make sure you have the best deal.
