With over 180 square miles, Scottsdale has plenty to offer for the outdoorsy types. Whether you want to get into the water, sit under trees, or do everything in between, there's something for everyone. However, with so much to do, how do you narrow it down? Here are five outdoor experiences to do in Scottsdale to help get you started.

Cycling

Did you know that the League of American Bicyclists has deemed Scottsdale a Gold Level Bicycle Friendly Community? There are plenty of places around the city to go for a bike ride whether you want to go around town or take a trail. With over 60 miles of trails, the McDowell Sonoran Preserve is an excellent spot to start. Check out this map of bikeways for one that most appeals to you.

Horseback riding

Horses are arguably one of the most beautiful and majestic creatures on the planet, and MacDonald's Ranch in north Scottsdale is one of the best places to spend time with them as they offer trail rides, stagecoach rides, and hayrides. They're open seven days a week except for major holidays and in the instances where temperatures reach 100 degrees or higher. The cost for a 1 hour ride is $45 for an adult and $40 for a child. Longer rides as well as private rides are also available.

Hiking

There are over 180 miles of trails located in the area, and two of the best places to hike are at the McDowell Sonoran Preserve and at Camelback Mountain. Some of the trails are pooch-friendly, so you can even take your furry friend along with you. It's a great way to get out in nature and enjoy the beautiful scenery. White water rafting

There are several places around Scottsdale where you can leave the land behind, hop in a raft, and hit the rapids. One company to check out is Salt River Rafting. They've been in operation since 1992, and will take you through the Sonoran Desert on an adventure of a lifetime. They offer several types of trips, including full day, half day, and two day. Prices start at $75 and go up depending on your age and the type of trip you want to do.

Golfing

The list of outdoor activities in Scottsdale wouldn't be complete without including golf. There are several courses to play on in the area, but one of the best is TPC Scottsdale. It's located in the Sonoran Desert, and is the only PGA TOUR property in Arizona. They have two courses – Champions and The Stadium – both of which are 18 holes each. The price is $83 and up depending on when you play and whether or not you're an Arizona resident.

While there's plenty of activities and entertainment to do indoors in Scottsdale, there's even more to keep you occupied outside. With almost 300 average days of sunlight every year, there's no reason to not get out and enjoy the sunshine in a beautiful environment.

Jennifer, I would love to try horseback riding again although I must admit those powerful and majestic animals scare me!  Very reasonable rates, indeed!
