Can You Afford Not To Have A Fire Extinguisher?
Today I'm in the process of mounting a fire extinguisher in our garage, right near the entrance into the house. It is centrally located and right near our kitchen. It got me thinking of how many homes we have shown over the past several months that appear to have no fire extinguishers present. Anywhere.
I have a close friend whose neighbor's house burned to the ground a couple of weeks ago. I don't know if a readily available fire extinguisher used early and appropriately would have prevented the total loss of their home. However, if one had been available could it have helped? Maybe.
There are different types of extinguishers for different fires. For home use, generally an A:B:C extinguisher is recommended. According to the manufacturer's literature, it is effective on wood, paper, plastic, flammable liquids and electrical fires.
If you are going to use a fire extinguisher, you should know what you're doing. The National Fire Protection Association says that you should remember the word PASS.
- P - Pull the pin to unlock the operating lever
- A - Aim the extinguisher hose or nozzle at the base of the fire
- S - Squeeze the trigger
- S - Sweep from side to side at the base of the fire
Remember, CALL 911, and get people out of the house!
The whole subject of home fires is not something people want to think about. It's scary and always seems to happen to someone else...until it happens to you.
