Every year about this time, throngs of people gather at Ocala’s downtown square for the annual Light Up Ocala event to be entertained and amazed at the over 320,000 lights on display.  This year’s theme is “A Dazzling Downtown Tradition”, and a local tradition is exactly what Light Up Ocala is.

This is the 30th year for the popular event, and it promises to be better than ever, with three entertainment stages, and over 40 craft vendors and a couple of dozen food vendors, plus a huge variety of entertainment for everyone’s enjoyment.

Besides the Christmas Parade and Santa in his sleigh, there will be dancers and musicians performing throughout the evening, a “Whoville” themed area for kids showing the animated film, “How The Grinch Stole Christmas”, and of course, the hugely popular ice skating rink will also have its opening at the event.

But the highlight of every year is the lighting of the 42 foot Christmas tree and the surrounding downtown area.  The lights are absolutely breathtaking and always generate plenty of oohs and ahhs from the crowd, as well they should.  The magical feeling of the Square after the lights have been lit is the perfect start for the holiday season.

The event starts at 4:00PM on November 23rd, and ends at 9:00 PM, with the tree lighting scheduled for 7:30PM.  Festival goers should be aware that the event will be crowded, like it always is, but with the expanded venue spreading from Citizens' Circle at Ocala City Hall to the Gaslight District north of Silver Springs Boulevard, there should be plenty of room for everyone to enjoy this fantastic event.
