What Are Your Ideas For Getting Rid of Robocalls?

Real Estate Agent with GreatWest Realty DRE# 00827565

When robocalls became illegal under federal law a few years ago, I breathed a sigh of relief.  Alas, that relief was short-lived, because it hasn’t brought peace to my phone, which is also registered on the “Do Not Call” list.

I have received calls from Rachel at
“Cardholder Services,” which the FTC declared “Enemy Number One” of robocall scammers  The FTC has filed complaint. I also hear from Ann and Scott, from “Account Services.”   You are sometimes given the “press 2” option to be removed, but the calls continued.  Twice, I punched through to reach a live person.  When I methodically tried to get enough information from that person about who and where they were located, they hung up.

For months I was plagued by almost weekly calls inquiring, “Are your carpets dirty?”  The calls continued, even after keying in the list removal option.  Fortunately, the “Are your carpets dirty” calls have subsided.  I suspect it is in response to an expose’ on our local TV station, CBS Sacramento Channel 10, by Kurtis Ming.  Kurtis is a go-to guy, when it comes to consumer issues and problems in our area.  To read Kurtis Ming’s report about a robocaller, you can click on:
“Who’s Behind Illegal Robocalls?”

Currently, I average 4 or 5 annoying robocalls each day.

Here’s the thing I don’t understand, folks!  If robocalls are illegal under federal law, and, if we are supposed to have protection when we register for the “Do Not Call” list, WHY are we continuing to have such a problem?

I also have a suggestion for consumers.  Don’t feed those guys!  In other words, if a robocaller is willing to break federal law by bombarding you with these calls, do you really think they are a reputable entity to do business with?

I am curious to hear any success stories about dealing with robocalls you may wish to share.  It’s a dilemma because interacting with a live body, or punching the “remove from list” option, only alerts them that THEY have a live body at that number, and the calls only continue!

There has to be more substantive solutions to this issue rather than continually hanging up on these annoying calls!  Tell us your ideas!

THey are annoying.  I get about 10 a day.  They are legal to a business number, however, and it is easy to harvest phone numbers for business off the internet.

We usually do not answer the home phone if the caller is unknown. This is not a practice that we would have followed in earlier years but is now seems necessary. If the call is important, they will leave a message.

We all seem to get these calls, even with the nat'l DO NOT Call registry!  I have call blocker on my phone too, like William.  But this week, I decided to have a little fun with one of these callers ... it was a live person and before they got too far into their spiel, I said very enthusiastically "Oh my God, I'm SO glad that you called today ... I've been wanting this (insert the type of item they're selling) for ages and I just can't believe what great timing this is ..."  I went on and on for another minute or two without taking a breath and THEY hung up.  I had a good laugh!

I think we all hate these calls. I'm on the No Call List in my area too but it doesn't help. Now I just look at the caller ID and if I don't know the number I don't pick up.

I don't mind the robocalls because they are just recordings. I absolutely detest the real telemarketers. Yeah, yeah, I know they have to eat and they need a job but for crying out loud, why doncha go to work where they don't only hire former crackheads?

Yesterday, I was doing some early Christmas shopping on Haight Street when some yo-yo called. She started in with she was somebody at so-and-so dotcom, and I told I have no interest in talking to telemarketers, to delete my number and hung up. She then texted to say she was an editor putting together her features section. I have Caller ID. She was from Lender Home Page, a spammer who promotes websites.

I enter each call as SPAM in the contact of my phone. Been doing it for years. They may call but I never have to answer them a second time.

I am on every no call list there is, and I continue to get these. The ones I hate the most are the purely recorded calls that never get you to a live person, unless you agree to buy. I want to get to a real person, so I can tell them to take me off of their list. Just hanging up on the recording does not allow you to warn them. The warning is required before you can file for damages under the No Call legislation!

I use my cell for everything but I have a home line; the robos call my home line (which I never answer because no-one else calls it). So essentially, I keep my home line so I can ignore these calls.

After not answering the long distance phone numbers- I have gone from 5 calls a day to 1 or 2 a week- this is also at the risk of not answering a call that I should have answered...  But it works- usually I don't answer and then call the number back- If it is a real person then they will answer- if not then it was a robo call....

Extremely frustrating and unfortunately I don't see a cure for this problem. I have registered each and every phone that we own on the "Do not call lists" and we still continue to get calls.

Our solution to robocalls is - we don't answer our home phone. We don't even give it out to anyone, so the only incoming are solicitors. We only have it for faxes.

We're also on the do not call list, but keep getting these calls. Several times lately I've answered and there's no one on the other end - it must take longer for the machine to activate?

Most of the time I let any call I don't recognize go to the machine. If it's someone real they'll leave a message and I'll call back.

My neighbor is getting one that really annoys him - not a call but a FAX. There's a number to call to be removed, so he called. Of course he wasn't removed. When someone answered he asked "Who are you and where are you?" and they hung up on him.

The calls are annoying, but when they're using up your ink and paper it's even MORE annoying.

Myrl, I've hit suggest...it seems that it's the only button I can press and hope to get a positive response....regarding this issue anyway.  I'm also on the "do not call list", but makes no difference...the calls keep coming.  So, since everyone hates these "Robocalls"...no one wants them...why do they still exist?  There really has to be something we can do as a group not limited to AR...a united front agains robocalls and telemarketers who persist in not following the rules  I'm not sure what that would be, but I'm open to suggestions.

Nick - I have sometimes wondered if the robocallers are mining the "Do Not Call" lists to feed their auto-dialers!  Robocalls have been illegal for a few years now.  But, there is no relief!  I keep wondering why not!

Hi Myrl,

These calls are so annoying and we just got a new number and are constantly getting calls from local businesses so they must be selling our new phone number they issued us.  We paid $1 extra for the unlisted number and that is a joke.
