Too Bad He Didn't Take Our Advice on a Referral

service and qualityI hear all the time that "agents are not created equal". Usually that is a comment made by an agent talking about other agents. Today I heard that repeated to us, not by an agent, but by a client.

We listed this couple's home several weeks ago and got them under contract after about three weeks of showings. It turned into a multiple offer situation and our client was thrilled with the result. The couple is retiring and moving to New Jersey so they can be close to family.

We wanted very much to refer this client to an AR agent in the area where they were moving, but they declined. A family member "knew" an agent that could help them, so they decided to use this family member's friend. Too bad. They came to regret that choice.

Today our client was back in his house finishing up a few items and getting ready for the move. We met him there to wrap up a couple of loose ends from the home inspection. He related to us a number of difficulties he ran into in New Jersey with his agent. His biggest complaint was that on numerous occasions, his buyer's agent wasn't returning his calls. He said that he and his wife were very frustrated.

When they finally found a home to purchase, he had to explain to his agent why he wanted to see the property condition disclosure. He mentioned other things as well that I won't repeat here.

He commented that maybe he had been spoiled by the level of our service and competence. When we heard that, we felt good...and bad at the same time. We wish he would have given us an opportunity to make a referral. We wish that he had not found out on his own that "all agents are not created equal"!

Tom, what a great compliment to you though.  So, he learned, and next time, will take the advice of a competent realtor.

Tom, Yes some people want to do it their own way and then end up wishing they had listened. At least you left them with a lasting good impression of a job well done.

Tom - Unfortunately, almost everyone has to learn this for themselves through a bad experience.  If an agent does it right, they make the transaction so seamless that the client thinks anyone can do it... and then they run into reality.

Tom, Big mistake using a friend of a family member.  We all know how those typically go. Why not use a tried and true referral?  I just don't understand how/why people make some decisions.  Congratulations on a job well done and serving another happy and satisfied client.

Jean--We feel badly for him, but it was his unfortunate choice.

Debbie--We do feel good about the job we did with them. Really nice couple.

AJ--You are so right. It's also a reason why people who don't have the right stuff for the job get into real estate.

Kathleen--Yep...we know. It was probably the only time they didn't take our advice.

It is great to know that you offer a superior service, but sucks to think that your former clients are not getting anywhere close to it.

More times than not, the same thing continues to happen. At least when you share a referral that is part of AR, you have a pretty good idea the level of work that will be accomplished for the folks you referred.

Kathy--Thanks

Andrew--You are so right. Leaving clients dissatisfied isn't really an option for any of us.

Chris Ann--As he was telling us this story we felt horrible for him and his wife.

Joe--We know there are a lot of great agents out there. But referring someone active on AR, that you interact with almost every day, gives you a much better chance of hitting the homerun we're all looking for.

Yes all agents are not created equal. Too bad for them. I am sure they wanted to help the family friend out. Sometimes relatives don't give out good advise.
