What does FSSD Mean in Franklin TN?

FSSD stands for Franklin Special School District. Many homes in the city of Franklin are zoned for FSSD, as opposedPhoto to the remaining Franklin homes that are zoned for Williamson County Schools.

The Franklin school district was created in 1906. The district’s boundaries were set in 1925. The district was granted the ‘special’ status in 1949 following a Special Act of the state legislature that allows the local Board of Education to tax property, in order to fund the schools. The boundary lines for FSSD were frozen in 1986. Homes continued to be built due to the population explosion in Franklin in the 1980’s. Neighborhoods sprang up across boundary lines and thus caused some of the homes to be zoned for Williamson County and some to be zoned for FSSD in the same neighborhood.
