Clean out the garage, make sure you can park inside. Get the snow plow out, make sure the oil and gas are at acceptable levels and get some salt for ice accumulation. We always get Pet Friendly salt for the decks and patio so our Puppyboy doesn't lick the chemicals off his paws.
OUR FIRST SNOW .... I Forgot to........... Did you?
As we all know, Winter sneaks up on you, so many of us procrastinate when it comes to getting ready for the snow and cold weather. I applaud all of you that have already prepared for Winter, But here are a few things that you may have not thought about.
1. Pealing Paint
If you have wood exposed with pealing paint, it is recommended that you scrape and paint over the exposed wood. The water can get into cracks in the wood and then freeze, damaging the area.
2. Clean out Gutters
If the gutters are no cleaned out for free flowing water, it will settle in the gutter, freeze and could cause damage to the gutter or buildup of ice, causing roof damage.
3. Caulk Windows
To keep the Winter drafts from entering the home around the windows, make sure that you caulk and seal around them.
4. Inspect Roof
With the latest storms across the country, it is best to check for missing shingles and replace any that are missing, so you don't have problems later.
5. Heating System checked
Now is the best time to have a qualified heating inspector come out and inspect and prepare the home for Winter.
6. Seal Driveway
If there are cracks in your driveway, it is best to seal them before Winter. The melting and freezing snow would damage the driveway, if not sealed before the Winter freeze.
7. Change ceiling fan
During the Summer, the ceiling fans are set to force the air down. In the Winter cold months, you should reverse the ceiling fans so that the air is forced upwards.
8. Cover window Air Conditioners
If you have a window air conditioner, either remove it from the window for the winter, or seal around it to keep the cold air out and make sure you put a cover on the air conditioner. It will last longer and the air will not come in through the air conditioner.
9. Clean Porch and Deck Furniture
Put your porch furniture away for the winter. If not, your metal furniture will rust and have to be sanded and repainted in the Spring if you don't.
10. Remove Soil from Pots and Planters
All your clay pots and planters will break because of the expansion of the moisture in the container if you don't remove the soil before it freezes.
These are a few suggestions for preparing for Winter. Can you suggest any others that I did not list?
