It's been widely reported that the first day of Hanukkah, also known as the Jewish festival of lights, and Thanksgiving overlap this year. How did that happen?
According to Discovery News, it has to do with a quirk in the Gregorian and Jewish or Hebrew calendars. This type of overlap occurs only on very rare instances, and the next occurrence is predicted to be many thousands of years from now. (This collision of events also has helped generate the word Thanksgivukkah.)
In addition, an overlapping of holidays sometimes can be expressed in special events. An assortment of concerts will help combine the celebrations of various upcoming holidays in the Richmond, VA, area. One upcoming concert that's free and open to the public is being held at 3:30 PM on Sunday, December 15th at the Fort Lee Playhouse in Fort Lee, VA. The 392nd Army Band will be performing this annual holiday concert.
Also, Yelp lists a wide assortment of upcoming holiday events in the Greater Richmond area. For example, Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden will hold the Dominion GardenFest of Lights 2013 starting this Friday, November 29th at 5 PM. Indeed, the holiday season is upon us for various festivals and celebrations of light!
