Changing Keys: From Harpsichord to Pianoforte

Where: DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum
What: Explore the evolution of spinets, harpsichords, and pianos in the 18th century in this exhibition of more than 25 instruments. Examine the differences in the various types of keyboards as well as the evolution of the instrument over time.
First Thursdays at The Mariners' Museum:

What: Meet up with friends after work and join us at The Mariners’ First Thursdays at The Mariners’ Museum: “What do you do with a drunken sailor." Looking for something fun to do after work on the first Thursday of every month? First Thursdays is a free social event featuring live music, a 50/50 raffle and food & adult beverages for purchase. As an added bonus, there will also be a select gallery or exhibition open during each event at no charge. The Mariners’ Museum will stay open later for the first Thursday, January through May and September through December. The theme of January 3rd will be “What do you do with a drunken sailor?” Audience will be asked to complete the question and at various times during the evening, the band will play the famous ditty and sing the responses. The Chesapeake Bay gallery will be open for tours.
Lights Galore

A Colonial Christmas at Jamestown Settlement & Yorktown Victory Center

Where: Jamestown Settlement & Yorktown Victory Center
What: Holiday traditions of the 17th- and 18th-centuries are recalled through special interpretive programs. A Jamestown Settlement holiday film and guided tours compare and contrast English Christmas customs of the period with how the season may have been observed in the difficult early years of the Jamestown colony. At the Yorktown Victory Center, hear accounts of Christmas and winter in military encampments during the American Revolution and glimpse holiday preparations on a 1780s Virginia farm. The museums are open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily year-round; closed on Christmas and New Year's days.
Christmas Tree Lighting
When: December 6, 2013, 7:30pm
Where: Historic Yorktown
What: A tradition that began in 1945 continues with the Yorktown Christmas Tree Lighting. Evening highlights include a 7 p.m. performance by the Fifes and Drums of York Town at the Victory Monument, festive music at Riverwalk Landing, the procession of lights through the historic village, and the arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus. This is a free event.
Christmas Market Days on Main

What: Whether you are searching for a holiday gift for family, friends, or as a treat to yourself, you’re sure to find it at the Christmas Market on Main. The market features arts and crafts, demonstrations, roasted chestnuts and hot cider, entertainment, and much more. Historic Main Street. This is a free event.
Yorktown Market Days and Toyland Parade
When: December 14, 2013, 9:00am-3:00pm
Where: Yorktown
What: Special holiday market featuring an assortment of items: seasonal fruits & vegetables; fresh seafood, eggs, poultry, beef and pork; fine sweets and baked goods including cakes, breads, brownies and cookies; coffee, jams and jellies; homemade relish and spices; organic and gluten free products; holiday wreaths, pines and flowering bulbs; homemade peanut brittle; quality art, and holiday music. Starting at 1:30 become a part of our Toyland Parade, jump in with a decorated a stroller or wagon, or even yourself! Santa and Mrs. Claus will be on hand to greet the guests. The Fifes and Drums of York Town will be leading the parade. As an added treat, the Polar Express will be chugging along through Riverwalk Landing. This is a free event.
Ceramics Up-close

Archaeology Walking Tours
When: December 20, 2013, 11:00-11:45am
Where: Historic Jamestowne
What: Learn about the rediscovery of James Fort of 1607 and the excavations under way this season on this walking tour of the archaeological site. This program is free with paid admission to Historic Jamestowne. The admission fee of $14 per adult includes both Historic Jamestowne and Yorktown Battlefield. Tavern Ghost Walk
