Gratitude for Pets on Thanksgiving Day at Byrd Park in Richmond, VA

Some of us just like cats or just like dogs or maybe neither species.  Our home happens to have one feline and one canine species:  an eleven-year-old rescue black cat named Buddy (who sometimes thinks he's a dog) and a 19-month-old miniature rescue poodle, Nathan.

Thankfully, our neighborhood is easy walking distance to a City of Richmond, VA, recreational area known as Fountain Lake, which is composed of one section of Byrd Park.  During my walk with our miniature poodle this morning, I thought about gratitude for animals.  Most people likely either have a cat or a dog, and some of us may another type of pet.

For the sake of simplicity, let's just keep the discussion on cats or dogs.  The following is a list of reasons why I happen to be grateful for my particular pets.

1) Nathan and Buddy play with one another and get along very well.

2) Variety can be a good thing, and maybe having one cat and one dog can work out for some people.  It works out for us!

3) Both Buddy and Nathan are loving and affectionate toward us.  Buddy often likes to follow me around and just meows for attention. Once again, I think Buddy sometimes thinks he's a dog and therefore shows more affection toward humans than maybe other cats normally do!

4) Nathan enjoys going on walks, and I probably can manage one dog more easily than walking two of them.  Buddy is more self-sufficient and gets enough exercise walking around in the house.

5) It's easier for me to pick up after one dog than having multiple dogs to pick up after.  On the other hand, it's also easier for me to have one cat than multiple cats.  Buddy's litter box gets changed regularly.  However, more multiple cats for me would mean having more frequent litter box changes and more mess to clean up.

Do you happen to have a cat or a dog, both, or some other type of pet(s)?  Do you happen to have an exotic pet you love?  Feel free to share why you happen to be grateful for them.  For some people like us, pets are like having kids!

Nathan is patiently waiting for me to pick him up and head down steps to Fountain Lake.

Nathan patiently waits for me to pick him up to walk down steps to Fountain Lake.

My sweetheart has an allergy to animal dander so we don't have any inside pets but we do have deer, wild turkeys, groundhogs, ducks, squirrels, geese, etc. on our property daily.   Though they are not the kind of pets you can hold and caress, it is wonderful to sit in the sunroom and watch them in the yard.   I am thankful they exist and offer entertainment for us to enjoy.

Joy & Deanna,

Thanks for your feedback about pets.  They can be an important part of our lives.  I'll be sure to include our feline next time in a pet post.  As pet allergies are very common, enjoying outside wildlife sounds like a great substitute!
