What is your favorite holiday Song or Christmas Carol? First to clarify, a carol generally refers to a religious hymn referencing the Nativity while a song is usually of a more secular nature.
And so I will offer two answers, one for my favorite Christmas songs and one for my favorite Christmas Carol. I will also suggest some of mt runner-up music in both categories.
Here we go:
My favorite Christmas song is aptly titled “The Christmas Song.” The classic tune by Mel Tormé and Bob Wells has some great jazz chord progressions that automatically generate a nostalgic aura. It’s one of my favorite songs to play but I won’t dare try to sing it!
Honorable mention for John Lennon’s haunting “Happy Xmas War is Over” and Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas.”
My favorite Carol is Placide Cappeau's “Cantique de Noël.” ( O Holy Night.) This is another tune that I love to play but am unable to cover the vocal range to sing!
Honorables go to “What Child is This,” the melody of which is an English folk tune with new lyrics by William Chatterton Dix. And of course “Stille nacht” (Silent Night) by Franz Gruber with lyrics by Joseph Mohr is a must play Christmas carol!
What about you? What are your favorites?
