Imagine A Bird Purring Like a Cat. Wait, Who?

This morning while volunteering at the wildlife center (WERC) we spent more time getting to know our newest Animal Ambassador.

Introducing . . .

The Saw-Whet Owl

Foresee Saw-Whet Owl Nov 2013 Foresee Saw Whet Owl November 2013
This owl is wild and hasn't been worked with.  Note the stern look, raised head feathers and defensive move with the good wing. Satisfied using a gloved finger as a pacifier, the bird is more cooperative for a while.

The owl's left wing has no feeling or use making it non-releasable.  Earlier this week WERC received the permits required to include the owl in our educational program.

This saw-whet owl came from the mountains in the Santa Cruz / Los Gatos area and is used to quiet woods and minimal human interraction.  Fortunately for him, we understand and will help him anyway.

Pssst - There's a Toys-For-Tots Program coming up in Morgan Hill on Saturday, 14 December.  Check back for details and find out who will join me there!

As always, let's foresee the possibilities . . . and get results!

Carol, Working with the animals comes with its own set of challenges and rewards.  The advantages for our educational animals are many (i.e. shelter, food, safety) and they would not survive otherwise.  The real joy is when we have a rehab release-just spectacular!  Thank you for stopping by and commenting!

Gene, Thank you for the vote of confidence!  This work takes a fraction of my time but it gives great returns.  Having some knowledge of the local wildlife comes in handy when showing homes.  Being a handler at a public event also reinforces to clients that I care about our neighborhood.  Thank you for stopping by and commenting.

Rebecca, That is a good place to volunteer your time. Animals are fascinating to watch and we can learn so much from them.

Debbie, Taking care of the animals teaches me much about patience and thinking out of the box.  Since it takes so little of my time, it's almost a guilty pleasure!  Thank you for stopping by and commenting!

Hi Rebecca, what a wonderful way to volunteer.  That owl does have a stern look and his head is smaller than most owls that I've seen, but I know that being taken care of at your wildlife center will make him comfortable with people.

Joanna, I'll see if I can take a "nicer" photo of the owl this morning.  We are working with it so it doesn't look so stern in public.  A couple of hours every week is a small time commitment for so much joy.  Thank you for commenting.

Jon, Thank you for dropping by to comment.  WERC just found out from genetic testing this owl is female.  Now the center will be working on a name for her.  I'm excited to see her again during my volunteer time!  I spend so little time with them, but it helps keep me grounded.
