Coming from Texas, I still think 35 degrees is cold. Yet these photographs, taken in Colorado Springs at the 16th Annual YMCA of the Pikes Peak Region Turkey Trot, demonstrate why running a 5K in cold weather can be a lot of fun! (Actually on Thanksgiving morning, the 35 degree weather with no wind was great weather for a race.)

1. The Turkey Trot is a fun Thanksgiving tradition.

2. With so many people running, there are plenty of things to look at. As result, those of us that are comparatively out of shape don't have as much time to notice how tired we think we are. (If I was in comparatively good shape, I wouldn't have been taking pictures during the race.)

3. People planned to have fun at the race. This guy ended up winning. This is what a 5 minute mile pace looks like just before the 3 mile mark. (Vegard Olstad and Ryan Meyer, pictured below, finished in 15:31 and 15:40 respectively.) The average runners time was 38:23.

4. The race was very well organized. It was run on a USA Track & Field certified course with varied scenery.

5. The proceeds from this race are used to help provide low income families with the opportunity to participate in YMCA programs.
This 5K was a perfect example of what attracted me to Colorado Springs. As a native Texan, I was initially attracted to Colorado Springs in large part because of the numerous scenic trails to run on, the amazing and friendly running community, and the numerous opportunities to race throughout the year.
