Holidays is Santa Barbara are the Gifts We Forget About

Every holiday season, unfortunately we are reminded through personal tragedies that we must slow down, enjoy our families every second and embrace the simple gifts in life.  In the flurry of hectic holiday shopping like Black Friday (now renamed Big Business Brown Thursday), Cyber Monday and prep work in hosting family gatherings, it's sometimes a challenge to slow down, stop, pause, disconnect and take a minute to reflect on how short life can be.  The Santa Barbara community and our tight knit neighborhood of the Mesa was reminded of this on Saturday with the loss of celebrity and fellow Santa Barbarian, Paul Walker at the early age of 40.

The holidays in Santa Barbara are extra special with our arts, trolley tours of lights, special events, the Parade of Lights in the Santa Barbara Harbor and other social gatherings around town.  But our Santa Barbara lifestyle is the biggest gift of all.  One thing is for sure, we are a community that cares about others and at times, we need to reflect on how fortunate we all are to share this town with friends and family.  It's amazing how much locals appreciate locals in Santa Barbara.  So much so, that when we support local businesses on Small Business Saturday, many of us find ourselves choked up with this gift of giving back to our community.

My mom once told me that you will blink and your children will be off to college.  She always told me to stop and appreciate every day as a gift and that my job was to give them the gifts of a well rounded childhood.  Raising my children in Santa Barbara and away from the traffic and advanced world in Los Angeles has helped them embrace this slow down and appreciate the simple things in life mentality we are known for here.  I, on the other hand, find myself relying on them to give me doses of this calming energy during the holiday season!

Tell your family you love them, make time to listen to them and be one of the bright lights on the Christmas Tree or Menorah this Holiday Season 2013!  Life is far too short to worry and sweat the small stuff.
