Luxury Real Estate: Santa Barbara Lifestyle / Bracing For Winter

luxury real estate marketing, berm building

It was cold, and  windy and we walked at a brisk pace yesterday afternoon. We were among the few with those who were walking their dogs, and the athletes who run on the sand. The first signs of winter have materialized on Sandyland Beach in Carpinteria.

Because of the winter high tides, the building of the berms have begun.  They are built so high that you can only see the second story of these homes.  During the winter season, the tractor will be here early in the morning to reinforce the wall.

Happy Wednesday, Cheers, Ron & Alexandra Seigel

Good morning Alexandra. Winter brings some lovely changes to our world. Berms are a necessary protection, and good that we have big old tractors to do the job. Imagine all the digging one would have to do building these walls by hand.

We woke to thick frost and a temp of 23. It's beginning to look a lot like... ;)

Hi Alexandra and Ron -- proper preparation will help save our beaches.   Still a pretty sight.

Debb,

At one time, I am sure there were people out here digging up the sand and building berms.  You are right about the tractors and how well they do the job.  Ron was remarking that it would be fun to drive one of them for a couple of hours.

Michael,

I love the berms, some of the kids and adults bring cardboard boxes to ride the berms down, and others have more sophisticated vehicles like plastic saucers...

Patty,

It is, but not as hard as when I was a student at the University of Minnesota.  It was so hard to get up and get dressed in zillion of layers just to walk accross campus, and even in the underground tunnels it was freezing cold.

I could get used to those winter preparations.  It is snowing and 5 degrees at my house in Colorado right now.  Brrr.  Now brisk walks for me or for Rocky today.

I didn't realize that it was necessary to berm up the sand like that, I learned something new!  Great photos!

Belinda,

I hear you, lived in MN, now I just like to go skiing.

Tony,

Thanks,

Dick,

We do wear windbreakers at 59 degrees, and the cold air emanating from the water.

Beth,

Thank you and yes it beats snow.

Larry and Sheila,

We do, and it rains and it snows in the mountains, and it gets down to 45 or even more...Of course it doesn't compare to your winters with snow, etc. A

I didn't know you did that there, Alexandra. That's very interesting and has it's own beauty.

When we lived at Virginia Beach, we also observed constant rebuilding of the beach. If this very expensive process were not taking place a lot more buildings would be in the ocean. Development close to the ocean has not been a smart idea.

I'd love the 59 degrees, as we most likely won't see anything like that in the Northeast until spring.

Wow, I had no idea about this.  Very interesting.  Nice to have a wide beach where this can be done.
